Pillerkaar performed in Northern Virginia at the Manassas International Festival on 9-15-17 and at the Leesburg International Festival on 9-24-17.
Pillerkaar rounded out a busy September with two international events in Northern Virginia. On Friday, September 15, Pillerkaar performed at the International Food Festival at Harris Pavilion in historic Manassas. The festival, in its 14th year, is put on by Nativity of Our Lord Orthodox Church and featured a variety of delicious foods from Europe and Africa along with a deejay spinning tunes for dancing. There was no established entertainment program but Pillerkaar took to the floor for two short sets and delighted the crowd with a variety of polkas and waltzes. After each set, audience members were invited to come learn dances, and the dancing area was quickly filled with eager learners! After the performance, two of the festival organizers expressed great appreciation for Pillerkaar's contribution to the event and their hope that it may lead to other dance groups getting involved in next year's festival.
The next weekend, on September 24, 2017, Pillerkaar performed at the 3rd Annual Loudoun County International Festival. It was a lovely, but hot 86 degrees, Sunday afternoon in Leesburg, and the crowds were out to visit the vendors, see the animals in the petting zoo, and take in the performances. Pillerkaar performed a full-length set, with dances ranging from the elegant "Padespaan" to the whimsical "Raksi Jaak," the intricate "Vanaviisi Valss" to the incomparable "Tuljak." As a special treat, Priit Vesilind also joined in the performance as announcer and provider of a wealth of information about Estonian culture. After the show, the dancers were pleased to meet some very entertained fellow Estonians who were in the audience.
