The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
I have created this video that was used for my student teaching 2023 self-assessment reflection. This artifact is a video where I am teaching Rational Expressions to an Honors Integrated Mathematics class. This artifact contains active participation by students and myself and shows how my classroom is run daily. This artifact was created for the purpose of being able to self-assess myself before the lesson and after the lesson by viewing my video.
Creating this video as a requirement for my school and for myself, gave me the advantage to see how and where I can grow in, or where is my strongest when I am supporting my students. As it states in the Knowledge Indicator 9-A, "evaluates best practices and research-based materials…,” During this lesson I was able to implement my own strategies to help my students understand the content I was teaching. I used various ways and provided them with a step-by step process using colors to make sure that they were on track while I guided them through the first problem. As Performance Indicator 9-I and 9-K states, “models’ professional behavior that reflects honesty, integrity, personal responsibility and confidentiality…,” “reflects on professional practice and resulting outcomes; engages in self-assessment…,” in this video it shows that I am modeling professional behavior by being respectful to my students and receiving back the same. It also shows that I am personally responsible for the education of my students, and I always want to make sure that I am teaching at my best. In addition, before the viewing of this video, I answered multiple questions about how I think I did and what I thought I could have been better in; after the video I answered the same questions in which I reflected and assessed myself more thorough from the results of viewing the video after.
In the creation of this video, it helped me grow as a professional educator because I was able to see myself teach and I was able to see things that I can’t see while I am in front of the class teaching. I have concluded that after being able to record myself and watch the video afterwards, meant that occasionally it is okay to record yourself for your own benefit to help you grow as a teacher. Being able to see myself and helped me change things around to better myself in my teaching and class management. Not only can you see where you can grow in, but you can see other things going on in your classroom that you might think you have noticed; video recording and self-assessing to bring out the best in you can help you grow as an honest professional.
I have joined this Padlet conversation that was used for communicating between teachers that are included in my professional learning time during student teaching 2023. This artifact is for communication across all the math groups inside the school district. This artifact contains active participation by teachers, my cooperating teacher and myself regarding unit assignments and unit assessments questions and adjustments. This artifact was created for the purpose of being able to stay in the same page and be up to date on what is going on each week.
Creating this Padlet conversation was a great advantage knowing what teachers’ discussion and which things are to think about regarding our students. As it states in the Knowledge Indicator 9-A and 9-D "evaluates best practices and research-based materials…,” “identifies paths for continuous professional growth and improvement including…,” being able to have these discussions one day a week help us all as teachers to find the best practices that we can implement into the students learning. In addition, identifying the paths to the best practice helps us continue to improve our professional growth as new and experienced teachers. As Performance Indicator 9-O, “participate in professional development, professional organizations, and learning communities, and engage in peer coaching…,” this shows that I am an active participator that interacts and engages in professional discussions that pertain to my content and grade level. Having these discussions, ideas, suggestions are ways where I can enhance my personal growth and develop new and effective ways to create lesson plans.
In joining this Padlet conversation, it helped me grow as a professional educator because I was able to interact with many colleagues professionally and discuss many topics that pertain to our assigned grade levels. In addition, having that opportunity did build my mindset and professional growth to be able to communicate certain things in a positive manner and I was able to be comfortable in designing my unit lessons knowing that we all as professional tam agreed to. The mentoring I had with not just my cooperating teacher but also with other teachers that wanted to get involve with my experience was exceptional, I believe that their guidance literally helped me grow as a professional.
