The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice
I have constructed this introduction to trigonometry worksheet for students to work on as part of their guided practice and independent work during a planned lesson, in student teaching 2023. This artifact is a class assignment that will be assigned to the students to work in groups or independently after working on a few guided problems first. This artifact contains the skills they need to continue with the Trigonometry unit as it is assessing their prior knowledge. This artifact was created for the purpose of incorporating the relationship with mathematics and real life.
Creating this worksheet which is part of my daily lesson plan helped students understand the meaning of the expectations that I require to achieve their academic goals in my classroom. As it states in the Performance Indicator 2-M, "uses variety of explanations and multiple representations of concepts that capture key ideas to help each student develop conceptual understanding and address common misunderstandings," I had the opportunity to create and incorporate students life experience, for example I asked students if they remember the time when, they will go out with their parents and purchase a flat screen T.V. and how would they be able to tell from looking at the picture in the box how big the T.V. was? And so, students will begin to think and try to remember how the information was presented in the box (T.V., phones, computer screens are measured diagonally). Alongside, I also created a second example that also captured the same key ideas using a different representations of the skill being learned and as knowledge indicator 2-D, “understand the relationship of knowledge within the discipline to other content areas and to life experience,” while students worked on this worksheet it that they learned the skills needed and at the same time saw the math content in other disciplines, for example in this case soft ball.
In the creation of this assignment, it helped me grow as a professional educator in creating something that also meant a lot to my students and their own personal experiences. As I created this artifact, I knew that I will be prone to incorporate more of their interests into their learning and for connecting this discipline with everything else in the world that surrounds them. I learned that not just informing them about the connection to real life and contents, but it also makes math more interesting to others when there is more to discuss during our class sessions.
I have constructed this group activity worksheet for students to work on as part of their class assignment, during student teaching 2023. This artifact is a group assignment that will be assigned to 3 students to work on, following a class discussion over the correct answers. This artifact contains the skills they need to continue to learn statistics and be able to meet their learning target. This artifact was created for the purpose of incorporating the relationship between mathematics and real life.
Creating this worksheet which is part of my daily lesson plan helped students understand the meaning of the expectations that I require to achieve their academic goals in my classroom. As it states in the Performance Indicator 2-N, "facilitates learning experiences that make connections to other content areas and to life experiences;” I had the opportunity to create and incorporate students life experience, for example as we discussed these answers as a class I was able to relate the sample method called stratified as “Strata” a meal (showed them an example of a strata) that was layered with different ingredients (also relates into culinary) and also referred to it as the “Strata Rock,” which I showed them a picture of how the rock have different kinds of layers and of course something that they may have learned in Earth science. Alongside, as knowledge indicator 2-C states, “understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning (e.g., critical and creative thinking, problem structuring and problem-solving, invention, memorization and recall) and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards;” while we discussed these answers and found ways to memorize the type of sample students were able to engage more and recall many strategies that can help them meet their learning target for the unit.
In the creation of this assignment, it helped me grow as a professional educator in creating something that also meant a lot to my students and their own personal experiences. As I created this artifact, I knew that I will be prone to incorporate more of their interests into their learning and likes. I learned that not just informing them about the connection to real life and contents, but it also makes math more interesting to others when there is more to discuss during our class sessions. I will make sure that I continue to care and consider my students interests when creating such meaningful lessons.
