The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
I have constructed this basic probability worksheet for students to work on at the beginning of class. This artifact is a class opener that contains a Latin card deck (called Barajas) where students will need to find the probability of certain events using the card deck. This artifact contains the skills they need to continue with the Probability and Statistics unit, and it was created for the third day after the introduction to Probability. This artifact was created for the purpose of incorporating their culture along with the skills students need to perform.
Creating this Class Opener helped students understand the meaning of the expectations that I require to achieve their academic goals in my classroom. As it states in the Performance Indicator 1-L, "uses information about students’ individual experiences, families, cultures, and communities to create meaningful learning opportunities and enrich instruction for all students," I had the opportunity to create and incorporate their family’s culture into the academic learning and used Latin deck of cards versus the American deck of cards for this lesson. As I created this artifact, I was able to know and understand how my students learn through their lenses. As knowledge indicator 1-B, “understand how each student constructs knowledge, acquire skills, and develops effective and efficient critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities;” while students worked on this worksheet it proved that students new how to use their experience, skills, and knowledge to answer the questions on the worksheet.
In the creation of this Class Opener, it helped me grow as a professional educator in creating something that also meant a lot to my students and their own cultural perspectives. As I created this artifact, I knew that I will be prone to incorporate more of their culture into their learning. Knowing their experience and family cultures I was able to put myself in their shoes and see the world of education much clearer when there are connections in between of learning. I can say that this is the beginning of my story of connect to success in my future classroom.
I have constructed this Daily Agenda for students to view at the start of class during student teaching 2023. This artifact is a daily list of things that we must get done in the period each day. This artifact contains the mastery learning outcomes for the day as well as a Spanish translation for the studetns who their primary language is Spanish. This artifact helps the students that have English as their second language and can read the skills that they will accomplish by the end of class a certain day. This artifact was created for the purpose of incorporating their culture along with the skills students need to perform.
Creating this Daily Agenda, helped students understand the meaning of the expectations that I require to achieve their academic goals in my classroom. As performance indicator 1-A, “understands the spectrum of student diversity (e.g., race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, special education, gifted, English language learners (ELL), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity) and the assets that each student brings to learning across the curriculum; being able to translate their end goal results in their own native language can help them understand the skills they need to learn and focus on that day to be able to get an end result at the end of class. As knowledge indicator 1-H, “ analyzes and uses student information to design instruction that meets the diverse needs of students and leads to ongoing growth and achievement,” I was able to create this lesson knowing that 60 percent of my student population comes from ELL classrooms form the year before and by making sure that my students have the communication needed to success makes me believe that incorporating their culture language can help them succeed in ,y classroom.
In the creation of this Daily Agenda, it helped me grow as a professional educator in creating something that also meant a lot to my ELL students and their own cultural perspectives. As I created this artifact, I knew that I will be prone to incorporate more of their culture into their learning. Keeping in mind that I am currently working with prior ELL students and potential continue to work with in the future I believe as a new teacher I need to keep in mind other diverse students that will come my way. I learned that by making my classroom native friendly I can be able to get huge academic results between my students and I and will be able to achieve many things together faster.
