SHERIFF'SEMERGENCYRESPONSE TEAM
Originally formed in 1986 as Blaine County SWAT, it underwent a revamp into the "Special Response Team" in the early 2020's before reforming into SERT in 2023. SERT is the Sheriff's Office's tactical team, referred to as "the sword" of the Sheriff's Office. It is an NTOA Tier 1 tactical team, defined by the National Tactical Officers Association as:
Contrary to what you see in movies, the objective of SERT is to utilize the minimum amount of force necessary to achieve a successful conclusion to an operation, with minimum hazard to citizens, property, and deputies involved. SERT's mission is to save lives.
SERT is a support element that is utilized when a situation requires the use of their specialized capabilities. SERT will implement and carry out appropriate tactics in situations that call for law enforcement intervention. SERT operators are rigorously trained by land, air, and sea; they specialize in everything from counter-terrorism to civil unrest, diving & underwater recovery, high-risk warrant services, HAZMAT & explosive ordnance disposal, VIP security, and much more.
Effective 10/25/24, SERT operators are hand-selected from interested deputies and subjected to rigorous training. Operators complete training on a pass/fail basis determined by SERT's leadership.

"...the NTOA believes that a SWAT Tier 1 team must be mission capable in ALL of the following areas: hostage rescue, barricaded gunman, sniper operations, high-risk warrant service and high-risk apprehension, high-risk security operations, terrorism response, special assignments and other incidents which exceed the capability and/ or capacity of an agency’s first responders and/or investigative units. "
