As the 2023 school year began to wind down, NKU announced that it would add six brand new sports teams to the roster of Division I offerings, beginning the next year. While public relations declared this as the good news of the year, there were more layers to explore.
As NKU had been experiencing budget issues and cuts to faculty, there were questions raised about the expenses and practicality of the new programs. This article spoke with the Board of Regents chair, athletic director, and Faculty Senate president to understand why the decision was made and what it would cost.
Prior to the departure of the NKU women's basketball head coach, the team was experiencing a rough 2023-24 season. The ladies suffered multiple tough losses in a row, but they looked to turn things around with a few key wins by the end of the season.

It was also important to note that it had not been the first time the coach had been investigated, as The Northerner had done an extensive investigation into her conduct several years back.
