EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
I have built a home at The Northerner, Northern Kentucky University's student media publication. Since joining the publication, I have published more than 150 articles and videos, ranging from breaking news releases to artist profiles and everything in between.
Northern Kentucky news leader LINK NKY has also republished 12 of my articles to their large audience base.
Serving as editor-in-chief since May 2024 includes presenting at our weekly staff meetings, reporting and writing articles, advising and editing the work of all contributors and fellow editors and collaborating with staff members like our photo and social media editor. Prior to serving as editor-in-chief, I was the managing editor (December 2023 - May 2024) and news editor (May 2022 - December 2023).
At The Northerner, we publish one featured magazine per month that is distributed throughout campus. We publish on our website daily and also send a weekly newsletter to nearly 18,000 subscribers.
Meeting new people from all facets of the community is one of the most enjoyable parts of being a journalist for me. Many of these connections have come directly from working at The Northerner.
The reporting process is my favorite part of journalism-- digging into stories, researching and interviewing.
Making connections and learning about the powerful stories of others is what motivates me to keep writing.
While interning at KET, I learned how to pitch and execute stories for broadcast, as well as how to write using broadcast style.
Each day at KET is unique, and I am able to explore and meet people from all across the commonwealth.
NORTHERN KENTUCKY ASSOCIATE PRODUCER
During the spring 2024 semester, I interned at Kentucky Educational Television—KET in Lexington, Ky. Two days a week I traveled to Lexington and learned about all things broadcast.
Nearly one year later, the director of Public Affairs called to see if I would be interested in serving as the first associate producer based in Northern Kentucky, and I gladly accepted!
In this role, I handle all parts of the broadcast process: pitching stories, conducting interviews, operating the camera, shooting b-roll, editing the story and writing the script.
One of my favorite packages I have created at KET was a story on an NKU student who interned at the Kentucky Senate. Being able to go on site to the Capitol and tell the stories of these individuals was a privilege!
PRODUCER & ANCHOR
I became the head producer and lead anchor for our student media newscast in January 2024. In this role, I put together our weekly 30-minute newscast as well as a 2.5-minute news break.
I work with our entire team, from audio to camera to the director. Each week, I work on my communication skills to serve as an effective anchor and use impeccable time management to plan out segments and determine when to cut or add packages.
Anchoring and producing challenges my skills when it comes to leadership and time management, but I have learned to adapt and excel in the role.
The two-minute news breaks are posted to The Northerner's X account.
I have the privilege of working with talented classmates that make the newscast production process something to look forward to!
DOCUMENTARY PRODUCER AND EDITOR
Producing a long-form video was one of my goals for the fall 2024 semester. I was able to accomplish this goal with the help of The Northerner's video editor.
Over the course of 20 days, I conducted research, interviews, filmed stand-ups, wrote scripts and edited this entire 25-minute documentary about Newport, Ky's history as "Sin City," which now has nearly 1,000 views on YouTube.
By using design and marketing skills, we were able to create a template that acknowledges our brand and highlights our stories.
SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT CREATOR
My experience also extends to social media, where I birthed and adopted the idea of posting feature stories to The Northerner's Instagram page. During this time, our social media engagement grew massively, increasing our follower count from 1,100 to 2,300 of the course of one semester.
I recruited our current and previous social media editors and collaborated with them to create our present social media format, which increased social media engagement by 51.8% in the first month.
One project included an Instagram reel getting student reactions about the new sports programs coming to NKU. I anchored and produced this reel, which was viewed more than 6,800 times.
Another TikTok video gave an overview of the results of the 2024 presidential election, which earned more than 120 likes on a platform that is still growing for us.
PHOTOGRAPHER
I have an eye for photography and am able to use my knowledge of shadow, light, depth and color to provide my own photos for my stories when our photo editor is unavailable. I have taken initiative and served as the photographer for more than 20 of my published articles.
