Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro

Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro earned his doctoral degree in psychology with a specialization in designing products, solutions, and services so that they will be easy for people to use. He is also an experienced educator, manager, leader and consultant having worked in large companies and small companies.

Dr. Shapiro's competency as a Human Factors Professional is recognized by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics which awarded him the Certified Human Factors Professional (CHFP) designation. His substantial and unique professional contributions to his profession have been recognized by his title of Fellow in the American Psychological Association (APA), the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). Dr. Shapiro's Leadership and Service was first recognized when he was awarded the Percival C. Norris Leadership Award upon graduation from Providence Country Day School. It was recognized again in when he was awarded the Ohio State University Graduate School Leadership Award. More recently his leadership was recognized by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society which presented him with the Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award for founding National Ergonomics Month (the same award which was presented to Captain Chelsey B. “Sully” Sullenberger in 2010). Most recently his leadership has been recognized by his colleagues who elected him President of the APA Division of Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology (an office he served in 2005-2006) and Secretary-Treasurer of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (an office he served in 2010-2011).

Dr. Shapiro is also an outstanding educator and leader of educators. He served IBM in a variety of positions including managing technical learning and new employee orientation world wide. He has also managed IBM's external employee education program in the United States and career coaching in North Carolina as well as Human Factors for IBM's large systems. Two of his learning programs, one of which he managed (new employee orientation) and one of which he designed (Blue Opportunities) have won major awards from professional organizations (ASTD Excellence in Practice Award and SHRM Innovative Business Solution Award).

Dr. Shapiro has presented for a number of professional societies including HFES, APA, Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), American Indian Scientific and Engineering Society (AISES), Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Documentation and Training (DocTrain) and Medical Product Safety network (MEDSUN). He also presents to businesses, colleges, universities, and schools on Careers, Learning, Leadership, and Human Factors/Ergonomics. His presentations are educational, informative, interactive, and fun. His participant comments and ratings are excellent.

Dr Shapiro's other professional affiliations include Sigma Xi (Scientific Honorary Life Member), Phi Kappa Phi (Academic Honorary Life Member), Society of Industrial Psychologists (SIOP) and AISES (Sequoyah Fellow).

He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. He received his B.A. from the University of Rochester and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Ohio State in Experimental Psychology. Dr. Shapiro has taught at Ohio State, Denison University, University of Connecticut and Dutchess Community College.
