Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds. Students must come to understand that letters and letter combinations represent different sounds. As we combine these together, we create words. Decoding is the process of using that letter sound relationship to figure out new words. As students develop their phonics and decoding skills, their rate, smoothness, and accuracy increase as well as their comprehension.
This section discusses the importance of phonics and decoding as part of the equation to reach comprehension.
The ways of prompting your child when they are stuck may be different than what you have learned in the past. If your child learned the Beanie Baby strategies, you'll want to check this out. This is a different approach.
We use a brain based program by Katie Gardner of Harvard to help our students remember the letter sound relationships. These involve stories about letters, certain phonics rules, and letter combinations.
Even when students have a grasp of the letter sound relationship, there is still more to learn. Together we look at syllable types, the use of affixes, and more. This section will address those strategies and understandings.
