Notice and Note authors Kylene Beers and Robert Probst also created strategies to help students navigate understanding nonfiction text. Not only do the authors provide signposts to help the students, they also ask them to keep three questions in mind whenever reading nonfiction.
There are three questions students should keep in mind while reading nonfiction. These questions help students to maintain focus, make connections, and determine what is important while also checking for understanding and finding what may need to be clarified. The three questions include:
What surprised me?
What did the author think I already knew?
What changed, challenged, or confirmed my thinking?
You will notice some overlap in the signposts from fiction to nonfiction. Contrast and Contradiction as well as Again and Again occur frequently in both. While the signposts in nonfiction can help determine importance and help the students to understand and analyze, they can also help a student determine the author's purpose and perspective. This can help the student to see whether or not the author shows bias in their writing.
