Students make an inference, or infer, when they take what is in the text with what they already know and come up with a new idea. We often talk about inferences as reading between the lines. Sometimes we tell students to think about what the author is trying to tell them.
Consider having your student ruin a good joke. We all know that explaining a joke ruins it, but it is a great way to see that your child can make an inference or help them learn to make inferences.
