Girmay is a PhD candidate in Structural engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Ålesund, supervised by Dr Torodd Skjerve Nord. His research focuses on the resilience of critical infrastructure, including hazard assessment and vibration-based SHM of critical transport infrastructure, particularly ferry quays.
During his research, he investigates how environmental and operational variability, including temperature, tidal water levels, and ferry docking and undocking activities, influences the identified modal properties of pile-supported concrete ferry quays. His work aims to improve structural condition assessment and quantify uncertainty in modal identification under varying environmental and operational conditions.
Girmay completed his MSc in Civil Engineering, specializing in geotechnics and geohazards, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). From October 2026, he is a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge, working with Dr Alice Cicirello on structural dynamics, Operational modal analysis and uncertainty quantification for structural health monitoring.
