Tips for Early Career Academics
Be the change you wish to see in Academia.
Some very short documents (2 pages each) and some online resources which can offer some guidance to new academics who will pretty quickly need to manage people and expectations.
These short documents are the result of discussions with friends and colleagues in academia and industry. They summarize the things that I learned (and that I am still learning!) by doing, attending trainings and reading books and articles on these topics.
The notes are summarizing my own opinion and highlighting the tips that I (AC) received, and other tips that I hoped someone would have given me when I started.
They are not meant to be exhaustive, but to offer a starting point for conversation to encourage mutual growth in academia. I hope they will encourage you to learn more on these important topics that are often overlooked in academia.
I am particularly thankful for the support and constructive feedback received from many colleagues. Any mistake or imprecision, of course, remains mine!
Constructive feedback is always welcome. Moreover, if you find them useful at all, it would be nice to know.

Embrace inclusive leadership
“inclusive leadership is not about occasional grand gestures, but regular, smaller-scale comments and actions.“
Inclusive leadership requires a day-to-day commitment on treating every team member fairly and respectfully. To value what each person can bring to the table, and to ensure that the environment is such that each person is comfortable in sharing openly if something went wrong, to give suggestions and constructive feedback, and to speak up.
Why inclusive leadership?
“Inclusiveness isn’t just nice to have on teams. Our research shows that it directly enhances performance. Teams with inclusive leaders are 17% more likely to report that they are high performing, 20% more likely to say they make high-quality decisions, and 29% more likely to report behaving collaboratively. What’s more, we found that a 10% improvement in perceptions of inclusion increases work attendance by almost 1 day a year per employee, reducing the cost of absenteeism.”
I think we need to focus more on inclusive leadership in #academia, and support the development inclusive early career research leaders.
This article provides practical tools to get everyone started on a journey of inclusive leadership that goes beyond looking at a pie chart that represents demographic diversity of a team.
