Both Banat and Sathmar earthquakes are crustal earthquakes, different from the intermediate depth earthquakes for which Romania is known, in regions with Swabians located in the Western part of the country at the Hungarian border. Therefore making the effects of these earthquakes on common and monumental historical buildings is a new contribution.
The lessons learned from considering monumental buildings will be transmitted to Bucharest where the method was first tried out to learn lessons from the grid of reinforced concrete buildings to the resilience of the street grid, by putting the research in the context of 19th century catastrophes. In this sense, we did a survey of existing photographs of such catastrophes around the globe and will learn for the Bucharest of Carol Pop of Szathmary, one of the early world class photographers.
