Spirited Away

Spanning the back of the upper level of Toho Town is a massive crimson wall. The wall, which towers at least fifteen feet, well above the surrounding buildings and trees, cuts straight through the back of the town before curving into the forest to...somewhere. The wall is entirely devoid of any ornamentation or markings, except for its middle. At the middle, the solid wall breaks briefly, revealing a large arched opening leading into darkness. Directly above the wall is some jade and gold-colored ornamentation not dissimilar to that found on a traditional Japanese castle. Peeking out from beyond the wall, the top floors of a massive hodgepodge of a building can be seen. To the right of the archway, when looked at through the right lighting (or when it occasionally illuminates itself) the words “Spirited Away” can be discerned, written in sweeping brush strokes.

Passing the shisa statue which separates the FastPass queue from the standby queue, guests pass through the large archway, finding themselves in a small, very dark hallway. After a brief walk through darkness, light can be seen as the hallways opens up to reveal a stunning view of a town at night. The park seems to be decorated for a festival. The streets are adorned with strings of lanterns, and various Japanese banners hang from some of the roofs. Sounds of activity can be heard all around. Making their way down a small ramp onto the streets of the town, guests pass multiple brightly lit eateries and shops. Through the rice paper doors and windows, guests can see the occupying (animated) blob-like spirits who are eating, cooking, conversing, or even animatedly arguing. As guests wind through the shops and surrounding festivities they will approach a cliffside and get their first view of the awe-inspiring bathhouse, which towers into the sky above. At certain times, guests may see a white and blue dragon circle in the sky, or a strange bird-looking creature emerge from the building’s top floor. In the distance, far off over the cliff, a small pig farm can be seen. Occasionally, the squealing of pigs can be heard.

Guests eventually come upon the ornate bridge that leads to the bathhouse’s massive main doors. Crossing the bridge, guests will see that the area surrounding the door has been roped off as a trio of frog-like servants are hurriedly trying to guide a large muck creature toward it. In a small alcove, sharp-eyed guests may catch a glimpse of No Face. Through use of a Pepper’s Ghost effect, the spirit appears and silently looks at guests before disappearing. Guests are lead away from the bathhouse’s main entrance and down a small ramp towards a service door.

Entering through a small service door, guests find themselves in the bathhouse’s boiler room, home to the strange spider-like boiler-man Kamaji and his soot sprites. Kamaji is seated on a raised platform and appears to be hard at work overseeing the massive fire-belching boiler as he attentively pulls chains and turns wheels, and opens and closes some of the spice cabinets behind him, only stopping occasionally to take a sip from his tea kettle. He mutters to himself, entirely unaware of the humans who have invaded his home. The soot sprites have formed an assembly line as they run up a small platform to throw coal into the boiler before running back down the front to get more coal. Guests turn a corner through an opening in the boiler room’s back wall, leaving the unaware Kamaji behind.

Past the boiler room, guests now enter the elevator maintenance room. The room is fairly plain with concrete flooring and exposed wood supports. Light from the upper levels of the bathhouse can be seen through the ceiling, accompanied by the sounds of the crowded baths. Occasionally, some exasperated yelling can be heard as the servants try to guide the muck creature to his tub.

Guests are separated into groups and herded into one of four elevators, the sides of which appear to be entirely open air (or glass if you want to be practical or realistic.) The elevator door closes, and springs to life with a thud sending guests up into the bathhouse proper. After a few seconds of darkness, broken only by the occasional ray of light, the view suddenly opens as guests are able to look over the bathhouse’s atrium (this sequence will be fully animated by Studio Ghibli.) The elevator rises, passing some of the bathhouse’s eccentric guests as they relax in the baths. One bath is full of human-sized duck creatures who shake and delightedly quack at each other, while another is occupied by a strange lanky spirit with a mushroom head.

Guests pass through the ceiling and back into darkness before the elevator suddenly stops with a “ding.” The door slides open revealing The Radish Spirit, who stands straight-faced, breathing heavily as he looks over the very full elevator. It doesn’t even look like he could have fit inside if the elevator was empty. The smell of radishes permeates the air. The Radish Spirit huffs as the elevator door slides shut and again begins to rise. The elevator again stops and the doors again open, this time revealing the hallways of the bathhouse’s servant’s quarters.

The servants quarters are beautiful. The floors are made of dark wood. To the right is a wall of rice paper doors. The other side is pitch black and the sounds of sleeping servants can be heard. On the left side, through more slat doors, is a small walled garden. Again, No Face can be seen occasionally, watching passing guests from afar before disappearing. One of the doors has been left open.

Rounding a corner, guests have finally made it to the loading area. The room is pretty similar to the hallways guests just passed through - exposed wood and rice paper walls. There are five separate loading platforms; one for each of the groups’ vehicles.

ride system

The ride vehicles are fairly typical trackless vehicles. These are themed to wooden soaking tubs. The inside features two rows of light green-colored bench seating. Each vehicle seats eight riders.

ride-through

Exiting load and passing through a set of opening fusuma, guests enter the main bath chamber. Winding around the exasperated foreman, guests pass some of the smaller baths which are occupied by a variety of strange spirits and attentive servants.

Reaching the back of the bath chamber, guests enter the largest bath which is occupied by the massive muck creature, The Stink Spirit. The spirit sits in the center of the bath as Chihiro tries to pull out a massive tangle of garbage from it. Two large water spouts hang over either side of the spirit, dousing it in water. The vehicles split off, curving around either side of the large mud-covered bathtub and toward the hanging spouts.

Through use of a mirror effect, guests pass under the spouts and into the aftermath of the stink spirit's cleaning. The spirit has transformed, revealing itself to be a River Spirit. The bath is now mostly dark, the only illumination coming from the head of the spirit itself, which floats over the bath surrounded by ethereal light. Clean water now flows out from over the sides of the bath. The spirit croaks out the words "Well done" before fading away. The vehicles converge once more and head towards the back of the bath chamber, passing through a mountain of muddy garbage. On top of the wall, a large creature with with frog legs and a mask similar to No Face's sits as it watches passing guests.

Passing through the mountain of garbage, guests enter a tight hallway and weave around a series of servants and guests of all shapes and sizes. As they make their way further down the hallway, the sounds of celebration can be heard. Rounding a corner, guests come upon a parade that has popped up in the middle of the bathhouse.

Aniyaku leads a small parade as he dances and sings about their generous guest. Just behind him is No Face, who has somehow morphed into a massive frog-like creature. As he lumbers down the hall, lines of servants flank him on both sides as they bow to him begging for tips.

Guests round the corner and pass the end of the parade. No Face has found Chihiro, derailing the celebration. He stands over her, his arms outstretched offering her an endlessly flowing amount of gold nuggets (an effect achieved through use of projection mapping.) Chihiro looks down at the ground, refusing the offer.

Guests leave the awkward scene by backing into another open-air elevator. The doors quickly close and rush upwards to the top of the bathhouse. Through the windows, guests can see The Radish Spirit riding an elevator on the other side of the atrium. Suddenly, the elevator stops and the doors open.

The elevator doors open revealing a small room at the head of a dark hallway, which is very sterile compared to the color of the rest of the bathhouse. The walls are made of meticulously polished, very dark stone accented in a few places by birdlike candelabra. To either side of guests stand a pair of massive vases, ornately painted.

As the vehicles begin to move forward, a voice that sounds like that of an old woman's can be heard.

"Well? Come in." she says as the dark hallway lights up revealing a series of brightly painted ornate doors.

"I said...come in!"

Suddenly, the vehicles are forcefully pulled forward through all of the doors. The sounds of the doors slamming can be heard behind guests. The vehicles suddenly stop in an ornate study.

The study is fairly typical, with a large desk covered in papers off to the side. The main source of light comes from a massive roaring fireplace. A trio of stacked green heads sit next to the fire, glaring at guests. At the far end of the room is a gigantic open window which overlooks the vast sea surrounding the bathhouse.

The vehicles slowly move forward, stopping just short of the window. At this moment guests can see out to the horizon. In the distance, a train chugs across the water as it heads away from the bathhouse. In the sky, the shadow of a large dragon can be seen as it twists through the air.

Just as guests are able to catch their breath a shriek can be heard. The vehicles twist around, honing in on a harpy that is perched in the corner behind the desk. It shrieks again, but is cut off by the cries of a baby. The vehicles again begin to move, this time turning towards a large open door.

Passing through the door, guests find themselves in a padded, wonderfully decorated children's room. Massive dolls are strewn about. In the center of the room is a large bed. To the side is a large pile of gigantic pillows. The soft cries of a baby can be heard. The vehicles stop and turn towards the pile of pillows as the crying fades.

The head of a gigantic baby rises from the pillows. "You're going to play with me, or I'll cry." he demands. "If Mama hears me cry, she'll come in here and hurt you."

The vehicles rush away again as the Baby begins to cry loudly. Leaving the baby's room, guests are once again back in the bathhouse proper, but the atmosphere has changed drastically. As the vehicles rush through the hall, guests may notice some of the servants cowering in the rooms, peeking out to see if it's safe. Banging and yelling can be heard in the distance. Both get louder as the vehicles reach a set of double doors, being guarded by a pair of frog servants.

After a brief moment, the double doors slide open, revealing a large room absolutely full of food. At the far end sits No Face, now even larger and more distorted than before. In front of him stands Chihiro, who is holding a piece of food out to him. No Face yells at her, his new massive tongue flapping out of his large mouth as he does so. The vehicles separate once more and snake around the food towards No Face and Sen.

Suddenly, the lights turn off as No Face begins to make retching sounds. The vehicles leave the room and enter a series of hallways, separated by rice paper walls. The vehicles separate and turn down different hallways. As they move down the halls, the rice paper walls are destroyed as it becomes obvious that No Face is chasing them (this effect is done completely with animation. Animations of No Face in this sequence are done in-house by Studio Ghibli.). The gelatinous creature attacks guests from both sides, tearing away the walls and trying to reach out to grab them. As he does this he begins vomiting profusely, occasionally spraying unlucky guests.

The vehicles reconvene in a large room. No Face quickly catches up and begins to break through the walls as he attempts grab the guests. The vehicles begin to spin, allowing guests a complete view of the destruction.

Suddenly, the a young girl's voice can be heard. "Hey, over here!" she yells. No Face immediately stops paying attention to the guests as he turns and slinks over a railing, away from the guests.

The music swells into a triumphant march as guests leave the chaos that No Face has caused behind. Rushing out of the room, the vehicles pass a few rooms of cheering servants and guests before suddenly coming to a stop at the bathhouse's entrance. Before them is Yubaba, a witch and the bathhouse's owner. She floats inches in front of the vehicles (through use of a KUKA arm, similar to the angler fish scene in The Seas With Nemo and Friends.). She glowers at the guests as she speaks.

"You are to leave this instance. This is not a place for humans. I've had enough trouble as it is with humans snooping around my bathhouse."

She stares guests down one more time before yelling "Get out!"

With that, the vehicles are pulled backwards, out of the bathhouse, and through a smokescreen, into blackness. The light returns, revealing the crimson wall that guests entered into the Spirit World through, with the vehicles now stationary at a small dock at the edge of a dried up river.

Cast members usher guests out of their vehicles. They pass through the wall just as they entered, again returning to the world of the living.
