Minnie & Mickey's Beach Party-Palooza
This show is a nostalgic throwback to the Beach Party/Surfing movies of the 50s and 60s. These movies were lighthearted musicals full of fun songs, groovy dancing, and a goofy style and Minnie & Mickey's Beach Party-Palooza will be a happy homage to this bygone genre. A simple stage show where Mickey and the gang sing and dance along to cheesy songs with a simple plot that basically just exists as a set up for happy musical numbers!
This is the same genre that Teen Beach Movie (A 2013 DCOM) was an homage to IRL. In the SAU, development of that film started alongside development of this land with a planned theatrical release. But production issues delayed the movie's release and saw it scaled back to the more or less the same made-for-TV film we saw IRL.
In the SAU, after years of development hell it was released in 2015 as a Disney Channel Original Movie starring Jake Paul and Maia Mitchell. For Teen Beach Movie 2, Jake Paul was replaced with Ross Lynch due to Jake's YouTube related controversies.
Minnie Mouse is new in town and trying to learn how to surfer to impress Mickey and his friends, but things get complicated when Pete and the Weasel Gang start causing trouble leading to the fate of Surf Swell Beach resting on the outcome of a surfing competition!
The Theater
The Theater is themed as the Surf Swell Beach Cabana. A large hut with a thatched roof and surfing gear all around. To keep with the theme of On-Location filming of Surf Swell Beach, there is filming equipment set up as well as posters for parodies of classic Beach Party movies with Disney Characters playing the leads. Signs indicate that Minnie and Mickey and all are here to film their new movie On-Location at Surf Swell Beach and we are here to play the townspeople. The "Director" comes up to hype up the crowd as a pre-show and walk them through how to give big reactions!
This theater is slightly smaller than the one for Beauty and the Beast, but it is enclosed. Which means it has AC! The smell of salty, ocean air is pumped in to keep with the atmosphere. And the wall behind the stage is a large screen to allow for easy changes for backgrounds and sets. Plus, it can play footage of waves for the surfing scenes to help those feel more exciting!
The Cast
Our cast of characters are all based on tropes and archetypes from old Beach Party movies of the 50s/60s (Gidgit and Beach Blanket Bingo being the two primary inspirations). These roles are played by classic Disney toons like Mickey & Friends! .
Minnie Mouse - The Leading Lady
She is the sweet, innocent new girl who just moved to town from the city and wants to learn to surf. A lot of people don't take her seriously, but she wants to prove that just because she's cute, kind, and new doesn't mean she can't learn to surf with the best of them! Plus, learning to surf might help her impress the hunky surfer dude which would be a nice bonus. A Sandra Dee type character.
Mickey Mouse - The Hunky Surfer Dude
He is the leader of the "gang" that meats up to hang at Surf Swell Beach an ride the waves. All around a good guy, he'd do anything to help out his pals and is always leading the group in new fun activities. He wants everyone to feel welcome, but is not against some gentle ribbing between friends. A Franke Vahle type character.
Daisy Duck - The Cool Chick
She's the sassy one of the group. Fiercely loyal to her friends, but never hesitating to throw out a one liner or two. While she might have serious doubts about Minnie's skill to actually become a decent surfer, she befriends the new girl right away.
Donald Duck - The Jerk with a Heart of Gold
He'd do anything for the gang, but to some people it might almost look like he hates them at times. Loses his cool pretty often and is usually the only one to vote against newbies joining them. But underneath it all he cares deeply for his friends. He just has a short fuse. Also, he greatly overestimates his own abilities.
Pete & the Weasel Gang - The Greasers
He leads a gang of bikers who occasionally like to go surfing themselves. A group of big bullies who want to take Surf Swell Beach for themselves so they don't have to deal with anyone else. A bunch of thugs always looking for a fight. The antagonist of our show.
The Supporting Cast
The rest of the cast are all regular humans in brightly colored outfits. They are mostly just there for dance numbers and back up vocals
The Show - Act 1
The show starts with Minnie Mouse moving to the town of Surf Swell. She didn't really want to move, but decides to make the most of it. At least there's a beach! She's never seen the ocean before!
When she gets down to Surf Swell Beach she see's Mickey's gang surfing and performing a big opening number about how great life on the beach is!
This Opening Song is called Surfin' Summer Fun for Everyone and is all about how much fun the beach is and how much they all love surfing! Plus, about it being a party that everyone is able to join in on! This song has a very similar vibe to Surf Crazy from Teen Beach Movie!
Minnie is instantly entranced by this seaside sport (and the hunky mouse) and rushes in to ask to learn. There's some resistance at first from Daisy and Donald who don't think she's got what it takes. Plus, a few one liners and short songs. Though Mickey agrees to teach her how to surf (while Ventures style surf rock plays in the background and dancers perform surf themed dances around them). Though Minnie is far from a natural at it and wipes out!
Mickey closes out Act One by singing Surfer Girl (the Beach Boys classic that is often associated with the Gidget franchise) to Minnie as he tries to help her surf!
The Show - Act 2
Pete & the Weasel Gang show up looking for trouble and picking a fight! They try to intimidate everyone to scram and leave the beach so Pete and his gang can have it all to themselves. We get a 50s rock song sung by Pete about how big and tough they are!
Musically, Pete's Song is similar to Cruisin' for a Bruisin' from Teen Beach Movie. Though with a bit more grit to it and more aggressive.
Donald starts running his big mouth (bill?) and gets tricked into making a bet with Pete. A Surfing Competition.
Winner gets the beach, loser has to leave forever.
Mickey has to practice for the big contest, so Daisy helps Minnie learn more about surfing. She starts to really get good at it! The girls also talk a bit about boys with Daisy being Smitten with Donald (Not that she'd ever admit it to that lughead). And Minnie Mouse wanting to be Mickey's Pineapple Princess.
Pineapple Princess is a 1960 Single by Annette Funicello (A frequent star of Beach Party movies) and written by the Sherman Brothers. It has been used by Disney before and is a perfect fit here!
The Show - Act 3
It is the day of the big competition! Mickey, Daisy, and Donald are out surfing and warming up, but the Weasels knock them off their boards in an act of sabotage! They are injured and can't surf!
It all comes down to Minnie Mouse!
Of course, she does wind up beating Pete in the Surfing Competition and everyone celebrates! Pete looks all upset because now he can't ever come to Surf Swell Beach again, but Mickey cheers him up by saying no one is banned! And they all sing a big final reprise of Surfin' Summer Fun is for Everyone!
The 2015 Update
In 2015, once the SAU version of Teen Beach Movie (which is the same except delayed a bit and starring Jake Paul and Maia Mitchell) premiers on Disney Channel, Minnie & Mickey's Beach Party-Palooza undergoes an update to tie in with the movie. Most of it stays similar except at the end of act one Mack and Brady show up like they do inside "Wet Side Story" and stick around to help Mickey and Minnie, Mack helps teach Minnie some more surfing tips and that she doesn't need to learn to impress a boy, and Brady talks with Mickey about the hot new chick and to think about how he feels about her with a rewritten for the show version of "Like Me." In between acts Mack and Brady don't show up again until the final number now changed to Surf Up Finale from Teen Beach Movie.
