1. Josef Fried was born around 1845 but no precise record exists.
2. He lives at Leopoldsgasse 28 with his parents 1867-70. In 1871, aged about 26, he moves out and is is living at Obere Donaustrasse 39. This is the one and only time when he is not listed at an address at which another member of the family is living. In 1872 he lived at Leopoldsgasse 24 where the Goldenzweigs were living and other members of the family would later come to live. After his mother died he moved to Rembrandtstrasse 1900-1913 and finally lived in Kreuzwiesengasse 2 1914-1918.
3. Previous research suggests that Josef Fried married Helene Fried and had four children - Paul (1880), Erwin (1882), Hans (1893) and Angela (1895). I believe this conclusion was arrived at based on a funeral notice that appeared in May 1919 which stated that a Josef Fried was aged 75 when he died and therefore born around 1845. This would be a reasonable conclusion to draw based on this information alone. However after further study of the evidence I do not believe this is our Josef Fried. A methodical study of the Lehmann address books shows a Josef Fried who I believe to be “our” Josef Fried living at the same addresses as other members of the family throughout his life. The children of Josef and Helene Fried were not born at these addresses. The father of Paul, Erwin, Hans and Angela was a hat manufacturer not a railway engineer. Further evidence of this is that on Katty Fried’s funeral notice it lists the spouses of her children such as Salomon Flesch but neglects to mention Helene Fried. I believe our Josef Fried never married which would explains why no spouse is mentioned on the funeral notice.
