1. Isidor Flesch born in 1838 according to his death records. See Genteam
2. Netti Flesch born May 1844 according to her death records. See Genteam
3. Julie Flesch born 9 June 1873 to Isidor & Netti Flesch. See FamilySearch. This is the first evidence that they were living in Vienna but they do not appear in the address book which suggests that they were living under someone else’s roof at this time. They were already married and may have been in Vienna for a few years. Perhaps as long as Salomon?
4. Ernestine Flesch born 9 Oct 1877. Isidor and Netti are living on Ruegasse 15 at this time. See FamilySearch. This is the same address as Isidor (occupation “Agent”) is listed at in 1878. See Lehmann’s 1878.
5. Isidor lived Rueppgasse 15 (1877-1878), Taborstrasse 58 (1879), Pfeffergasse 1 (1880-82), Afrikanergasse 9 (1883), Glodengasse 6 (1884-85), Novaraggasse 19 (1886-89), Rothen-Lowengasse 8 (1890).
6. Isidor advertised in the Extrablatt 29 March 1900
7. They eventually settled down on Rembrandtstrasse 30 (1893-1904), moved to Rembrandtstrasse 35 (1905-09) and Rembrandtstrasse 35 (1910-1920, 1925-1941)
8. Isidor died 10 April 1912 aged 74. See Genteam.
9. Julie Flesch is listed living at Rembrandtstrasse 35/3 in the 1913 Lehmann’s. Occupation “Blusen u. Wascheconsect”
10. Their neighbours can be found by methodically searching Lehmann’s address books.
11. Josef Roth is not listed but is reported to have lived in the building when he first arrived in Vienna in 1913. He probably sub-let. It was probably the address he wrote down on his university enrolment forms. Rembrandtstrasse 35 is also the title of a short chapter in the Italian author Claudio Magris’s 1986 classic “Danube” where the author makes a pilgrimage to where Josef Roth once lived.
12. The fact that there were two Julie Flesch living on Rembrandtstrasse led to a lot of confusion, especially as their mother’s were both called Netti Flesch. Once I had established that they were two separate women but both related I then had to decipher the evidence in the address books. One possible interpretation is that they lived together but there are other possibilities. It is possible that there was some confusion in compiling the address books.
13. Ernestine Flesch first appears in the address book in 1926 (when she would be almost 50 years old). She is listed as “private” living at Uhlandgasse 2.
14. Ernestine Flesch is no longer listed after 1931. It is assumed she died but there is no record of her death.
