Draw + Adjust
grenerate drawings from your cut paper design
use graph paper to draw a square and develop three different designs
create three values in each drawing - black, gray(or stripes) and white
email yourself a photo of your drawings
create a file in photoshop 8.5x11
import the drawings into Photoshop
copy/paste each drawing on to it's own layer
adjust each drawing w/ image adjust>brightness/contrast
save your file with a distinct name
Assignment due! Turn in your drawings and these tessellation (blk+wht) images.
Pattern Generation
copy / paste your design and rotate it 90,180 or 270 degrees to create a 4x4 design
do this for all 3 drawings
look at the examples in “Drawing Patterns” photo folder to the right
save your individual designs as “jpg”
give them serial names by adding 1,2,3 or a,b,c to the end of the file name
save them in a place you can find them
on the windows laptops it is the folder on the desktop with your name on it
you can create a folder for this class inside the documents folder if you want
Add contrast to individual designs
image>brightness/contrast
Use the “Cutout” filter to mimic the carving process
filters>filter gallery>artistic>cutout
use the sliders to adjust the filter
magic wand tool (w) light and dark portions of your design
copy / paste your designs to isolate the dark and light shapes
lock transparent pixels
use paint bucket / gradient tool (g) to change the color of your shapes
generate color combinations and save as individual jpg files

Make 100 designs!
Your designs need to be 8.5" squares
I will collect these in class and print them out. Once everyone is finished we will install a gradient somewhere on campus. Check out the "installation view" photo folder.
