Project Prompt: Wearable Animal Mask
You will construct a “mask” that must be wearable on your head and should represent some animal or idea. It would be good if it related in some way to what you are thinking of doing for your concentration but the piece could also just be for your Quality section. Ideally, it will serve for both. Meaning, it is well made and has something to do with your year-long inquiry. It will be made out of cardboard. It can be painted in the end but you should focus on making the mask shape, not texture or surface color. I will be grading on construction and idea. You will also write something about what you were exploring as it relates to an idea.
Documenting your work
Please look at the example photos (right) from Monday and upload 10 images of your work.
images need to show several views including views of the inside
consider the lighting
include at least one shot of someone wearing your mask
use a solid background (provided) so details on your mask will be evident
Cardboard Mask
Make a larger-than-life cardboard mask. This can be fabricated out of any cardboard or paper-based corrugated material found in the studio and must fit on the student’s head. See the photos attached for examples of previous projects. This project sets a precedent for how projects should be approached and documented.
Time: 11 class periods (due date Early September)
1 day in class research rubric outline
2 days prototyping
8 days full-size project
Fabrication
How well is it made?
Is the material use inventive?
How efficient was your use of the material?
Connections - staples, tape, glue
Scoring, bending, cutting
Structure/supports
Is the mask structurally sound?
What things look elegant?
What things need improvement?
Does it look finished?
Can the student wear the mask?
Originality
Does the mask look like the animal?
Is the scale appropriate?
Too big, too small
Wearable?
Are there unique solutions to common problems?
Effective use of the structure and directional corrugation of the material.
Decorations or flare?
Additional superficial use of the material to create texture and decoration.
Multiple purposes of material, structure, form, decoration
Effort
Did the student use the class time effectively.
Did the student had a plan when they were working in class?
Did they achieve daily goals set towards completion of the project?
If the student missed class, did they come in to make up that lost time?
Did the student work outside of class?
Is there evidence of research outside of class that informed their work in class?
Did they work in the studio, or at home, outside of class time?
Is there evidence of material awareness and improvement throughout the project?
Improved use of material and fasteners
Are there detailed elements more complex than other parts of the mask.
How efficiently did the student use their time?
Did the student finish in time?
Example of an idea for the project:
If in your concentration you mention how humans are at the top of the food chain and “take over / ruin” nature. Choose an animal that is impacted greatly by our presence, for example, pets. Pets are a huge burden on society and are really a thing that only wealthy groups have. Because they are expensive and are completely dependent on us to survive. What animal could you choose that shows this conflict or idea. We can talk more about this in person because it is more productive but, wolf, fox, the dog is a good one because they are similar and can reproduce with one another sometimes but are sort of at different stages of assimilation. Wolves are wild, Foxes live near people and scavenge and Dogs pets. They depend entirely on us to survive. That is just one example but that is how I want you to think about this project.
