You will create 10 unique designs using a 2" bristol paper square. You will cut and score the paper to create a dimensional form without removing any piece of the square. You will mount the best 5 on a 4"x15" piece of bristol and choose one from that set to create a sculptural array. The set of 30 will be arranged in a pattern on 12"x19" bristol. The final array will also be mounted on foam core.
This is a three part Project: prototype > tessilation/array > translattion
In the first part of the project you will create a five variations of your design and attatch them to a 4 x 14 peice of bristol paper. From these five designs you will choose one and refine it.
Once the piece is refined (several versions adding, replacing, and removing parts) you will start the second part of the project, which is to make thirty copies of your piece and arrange them in an array on a 12 x 19 price of Bristol. You will mount your arrangement on a full size piece of Bristol and hang it on the wall.
In the final stage of the project you will document your piece by photographing it with your iPad under dramatic lighting and develop a flat pattern for the next project.
Each of the parts outlined above corespond to a stage of the project and will be graded portions of the assignment. The largest part (middle/array) holds the most weight and will take the most time. This is your resource for the entire project.
Constraints:
Each 2 x 2 square must be intact. (no removal of parts or peices)
You can score or cut the paper to create your design.
The five versions should be unique and complex.
Attatch your five veriations to a 4 x 14 peice of bristol paper.
The thrity individual peices should be identical.
They can connect in any way you devise along the plane of the paper.
You can create clusters of any size as long as you use all thirty elements.
You have to have at least thirty peices in your final arrangement on the 12 x 19 peice of bristol paper.
Steps:
Come up with ten different designs based on the square. (two class days)
After making five or so pick one you like and try to improve on the design by either simplifiying it or making it more complex.
Choose the best five designs and mount them.
Choose the best design of the five and figure out how to cut thirty. (three class days)
Spend one class mounting the elements to the large peice of bristol.
