This multimedia course teaches students the design process using hand-tools and software. These skills provide a strong foundation for work in any other upper school Studio Art course by introducing the design method and giving an opportunity to work with a variety of materials.

2D/3D Art+Design is a multimedia course that covers the design process and emphasizes hard skills using a variety of studio tools. Including matte knives, pens, pencils, and design software. These skills provide a strong foundation for work in any other upper school Studio Art course.

Principles of Design Intro - We will do several excercises exploring and introducing graphic design methods and principles.

2x2in Cut Paper Patterns - Materials: Bristol paper, Xacto knives, Alvin cutting mats
Make ten versions of your design on a 12x8 strip out of 2x2in Bristol paper
Choose the most interesting one and create an arrangement of 25-30 of those identical elements
Cut Paper Array - Materials: grid paper, notability, markers
You can use lines, stripes, black and white in the design.
You may draw them on graph paper or use notability.
If you draw them on graph paper photograph each design and use notability to create repeating patterns with at least 4 lines of repeats.
2D Textile Pattern (two-part project) - Materials: Photoshop, Akura printing ink, paper, fabric, pink easy cut blocks, carving tools
Digitize your design with Photoshop for installation on campus
Create a printable element for a textile pattern.
Transfer your pattern to a 3x3 inch pink easy cut block.
Experiment with different color combinations with Akura inks printing on paper and fabric.
Clay Tiles - Materials: clay, clay carving tools
Create a 6x6 inch clay tile made from the pink stamp block.
Carve clay tile to be bisque fired
Glaze tile for final
3D Printed Designs - digital 3D design
Students will use SketchUp to design a 3D model of their design.
Print 3D design using MakerBot
Laser Cutter - design .svg files
choose a puzzle topic and style.
design the .svg cut file
collage, etch or paint the puzzle content
cut the puzzle design on the laser cutter.
Possible substitution projects:
Textile project addendum - Laser cutter
Students will use the laser cutter to etch and cut their design onto a 1/4 birch panel.
Editorial Illustration - Select a news item from the New York Times or other paper that has strong visual imagery.
Create 3 illustrations on 5x7 cards that illustrate a principles of Design. (use the wired article about net neutrality from my PDFs on google drive) Materials: 5x7 canvas board, paint, makers, collage, stamps
Each card should focus on one principle of design.
Use stamps or stencils on at least one of the cards.
Use the collage element in at least one of your designs.
Generative form (subtractive sculpture) - Materials: plasticine, flower foam, soapstone
Use Henry Moore film as a motivation to talk about additive and subtractive sculpture.
Have them draw in their sketchbooks while watching the film
Do small moquettes of a 3d sculpture that shows movement out of plasticine

Attendance
I take attendance when class starts, if you are not present, I mark you absent. When you arrive with a note please do not interrupt the class. I will either be giving a demo or going over what we will do that day. Once I am finished give me your note or alert me to the email your teacher sent about your tardiness. If you do not have a note, you will receive an MR.
Devices
I do not allow devices in my classroom, unless I specify that you need them. If I see you with a device you will be given an MR. This is your one and only warning.
Grading
Please find the “Rubric” attached on the bulletin board for this class. This is a guide for how each assignment will be graded. We will have group critique as well as formal assessment on each project. Projects/Classwork count for 90% of your overall grade and Homework counts for 10%. This items will be marked as such on the Assignments as they are given. All assignments will be graded through MyBaylor. Late work will be accepted throughout the semester. Each day an assignment is late the maximum points available for that assignment is reduced by 5 pts. The minimum points you can receive on completed late work is 55 pts. (10 class periods late) If assignments are due on a day you are absent, the assignment is due the next class day you are present.
Extra Help & Extra Credit
I am available every morning in Ireland 102 for extra help. I do not give extra credit.
