I highly recommend you start organizing your work online. (Google Drive and Dropbox are my top choice but you can use Instagram, Tumbler, WordPress site, google drive, whatever) Something is better than nothing. You will present this to me at the beginning of the course in the fall.
I would encourage you to make a seperate repository (less formal) of things you "like." This can be a notebook, journal, Pinterest page, Instagram inspiration, Twitter, Facebook, or even a group of images in your photos on your phone. This should coincide with your interest and somehow relate to the work you want to do in this class.
This class is about exploring your interests and making work about that. I'm here to help you develop a portfolio and learn to describe your work coherently. As well as develop tools that help you better understand your artistic passions.
You must look at art thoughtfully. To be a good producer of art you have to be a knowledgeable consumer of art.
There are three big projects for this intro to sculpture class.
Additive -
Cardboard Mask Project - This first project is about learning how to use a material by cutting, scoring and gluing.
Modularity -
This is a two part project using where you make a sets of complex objects out of many parts or peices.
Reductive (casting) -
This is a project focuses on a reductive method of making art. Traditionally this is done by removing chunks from a large block of stone, wood or plaster. But contemporary methods of removal, where the absence of something is paramount instead of it's presence is also something you can consider.
You can chose to focus on the casting method as opposed to the carving method. You can also chose to make something that requires skills from both methods.
