Editorial Illustration - Select a news item based on a topic you are interested in from the New York Times or other paper that has strong visual imagery. Create three illustrations that illustrate a concept using the principles of design. Create one counter point to one of your illustrations. This project allows you to use digital media in tandem with physical materials.
Each illustration should focus on one concept in the article.
Contrast is an excellent ilustrative design method. It uses what the veiwer knows already and adds to that understanding by presenting a counterpoint or additional symbol. (think light and dark, calm and chaos, full and empty)
Use collage elements in at least one of your designs.
Consider having a theme with your designs like faces, symbols, patterns, and colors. This will tie your group of images together.
When creating the counter point think about the perspective that the article presents and what perspective it opposes. Sometimes switchin one element in an exsisting design will create the opposite message.
Use the attachment "illustration outline" to plan your illustrations. This will help temendously with the execution of you illustrations.
As you click through the images to the left, ask some questions about what they mean.

Who is the image for?
What is the image about?
How does it affect me?
Do I agree or disagree with the message?
