Target Audience: Mondoro Furniture Co.
~ # of classes: 20
Mondoro manufactures a number of "collections" of furniture and home decor products. Each collection has its own style and signature visual elements. They already have some lighting products, but are looking to develop some innovative new designs for lighting the fit into these collections. Your design task will be to design and create a working prototype of a lighting product that fits into one of Mondoro's collections.
In this project, your target audience is Mondoro interior design company. It is an American owned enterprise which manufactures furniture and other home interior items both in Vietnam and China and sells them to high end outlets in the USA and Europe. Mondoro's president, Ms. Anita Hummel, has worked with UNIS students in the last and is willing to help answer any questions you have, guide your design process and ultimately to choose a functional prototype to incorporate in her lighting collection.

Now that you know what problem you would like to solve, it's time to think about research. Your questions should cover both content and skills research, categorized into primary and secondary sources.
Look at existing solutions that you think will engage your target market. Use the SWOT Analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of these solutions.
Existing projects should include Mondoro lighting products as well as products from other companies.
What design specifications will make your end product successful? Write your ideas down in the imperative form (i.e. it must do..., it has to include…).
Concept sketching is an integral part of the design process when creating a solution. Based on your design specifications and the opportunities you identified during your SWOT analysis of existing products, begin to sketch out different ideas and share them with others for feedback.
Your sketches should be annotated and easily comprehended by your client.
Share your finalized concept with your client for their approval of your chosen solution pathway.
Anita Hummell from Mondoro will be available to check over your chosen design which must be fully justified and presented to her.
Present the final concept as an accurate and detailed plan. This should also be included in a presentation to the client to communicate final objective before acting.
Now that you have completed your design plan, reflect on your progress with this self assessment.
Complete the questions below on Veracross in the notes section:
Plan out key dates and detail what needs to be completed by that date. What resources you will need? Backwards plan by starting at the bottom of the template with the final due date and working your way towards the top.
Key Date: February 21, 2019
What needs to be done: My final stage prop will be finished and ready to deliver for the Musical dress rehearsals.
Resources: Plywood, band saw, jigsaw, 3 hinges, Onshape
While you are creating your solution, you must document the process that you have gone through to demonstrate the technical skills you are learning. This can later serve as a roadmap to create similar products or solutions.
Write or record the following:
This is a process journal of the skills and work you do along the way. Record a video, take photos, etc. etc.!
Present your final solution and document, whether or not you met your key dates or had to change your plans. This can also be a link to your final product or solution.
Think of this as a reflection on the final product and your time management.
During the design cycle, it is rare that everything goes to plan. Measurements need to be adjusted, unforeseen events interfere with key dates.
Document any challenges that you encountered while making your solution and describe what changes you made to your design and plan as a result.
Challenges: I couldn't get the product finished in time for my due date because I missed 2 classes due to a sports tournament abroad.
Justification for any changes made to your design and plan: My plan had to be adjusted by pushing back my key date by 1 day since I had to use academic prep time to finish sanding my product. My design changed a little bit because I didn't have time to paint my product.
Now that you have completed your product or solution, help out a peer in reviewing their work.
Go to the peergrade.io feedback for this project. You will give feedback for at least 2 peers before you can receive their feedback for your work.
Go back to the design specifications that you created in B1. Look at the testing methods that you considered using to test if those specifications would be successful. Design and carry out those methods.
Typical testing methods include:
Go back to the design specifications that you created in B1. Based on the tests you conducted in D1, include the link to the results of this testing. Evaluate the success of the testing. Were your design specifications met?
Real data matters to support your conclusions!
Think about how your solution impacted your target audience. Include reasons or causes.
This is your final chance to explain the success and impact your product has had for Mondoro.
