PRINCIPALS OF REDUCING SCAR APPEARANCE
FIRST 2 WEEKS
1) REDUCE TENSION: During initial healing reduce activity, tension and movement at location of excision. You may notice that the excision is raised with the sutures. This is purposeful to reduce tension so that area will lay flat when suture are removed. Intense exercise can slow wound healing. ** 2 weeks after procedure the strength of the wound is about 20% of what it was prior to the procedure.
2) KEEP EXCISION CLEAN AND MOIST: Infection and scab formation can increase scar formation. Wash the excision gently with a mild soap and water twice daily. Keep the excision moist with Aquaphor at all times.
3) HYDRATE
AFTER SUTURE REMOVAL
1) SILICONE GEL OR TAPE: Decreases frictional forces and keeps skin hydrated. This should be continue for one year.
2) APPLY SUNSCREEN: Apply sunscreen to wound if it is exposed to sun
*** Always avoid tobacco use, excessive alcohol use and if you have diabetes, keep your blood sugars under control
*** Scars take one year to revise and fade.
