An excess of pigment causes the dergon’s base color to become near black. Markings may be affected, or may show Vibrant genes as usual.
Base must use the Black or Off-Black slider, unless Gemtone, in which case the Onyx range base of the color family may be used (e.g. a Melanistic Sapphire dergon may use the Ocean slider).
Markings may be affected by Vibrant and Gemtone genes, but if the base is Natural, then markings must also be Black or Off-Black. If affected by a Vibrant gene, the markings may use the Onyx or Stone range of their marking family sliders (e.g. Rain and Ocean but not Mist), but if Gemtone than the entire Gemtone slider (or the full height color family slider) may be used.
Free markings (minus free common) may use the Natural marking color slider.
Flight may use the original base color slider.
Eyes should be either dark brown, dark red, or gold. Markings which are specifically lighter or darker than the base must still present as such; the base may need to be lighter than the darkest allowed shade to accommodate this.
If present alongside Calico, Melanism may cause all three bases to be chosen from the Black or Off-Black bases, with up to one chosen from the Onyx slider.
