Chitrakathi is a bold folk art from Maharashtra, characterized by storytelling panels and a performative style that integrates paintings with rhythmic narration, songs, and gestures. This is characterized by the word Chitrakathi itself, as "chitra" means painting and "katha" means story. Thus, Chitrakathi is the ancient style of narrating stories using a set of pictures.
Kathith celebrated this art style with a workshop led by Shri Chetan P. Gangavane, who is the son of Shri Parshuram Vishram Gangavane, the recipient of the fourth-highest civilian award of India Padmashri.
Although this workshop has concluded, there is now an online recording available for people to watch! Thank you, Shri Chetan P. Gangavane, for lending your expertise in this unique art form that blends the visual and oral performance. We hope you'll watch the recording and can join future Kathith workshops!
