Math Hiring Committee

In the Spring of 2021 Dan Serafini announced he would be retiring at the end of the semester. Myself, along with the rest of the IVCC math department and the dean of the Natural Sciences and Business Department, Ron Groleau , formed a math hiring committee to find Dan's replacement. From February 19th until April, 16th, the committee met several times to discuss the hiring process and to interview candidates both virtually and in person. We interviewed three potential candidates virtually and chose two to bring to campus for in person interviews. Over two days we met each candidate for a formal interview, to evaluate a teaching demonstration, and to answer any questions about the college they might have. After the on campus interviews, we met to discuss each of the candidates and give our recommendation to human resources. In the end, they went with our recommendation and hired Emily Morgan as the new full-time math faculty member.

This was my first time serving on a hiring committee. I found it very valuable to experience the hiring process from the other side. I learned a lot from my fellow math faculty members and Ron Groleau on how to assess a candidate.
