When I first started at IVCC, Technical Mathematics was taught in an emporium style. With the advent of co-requisites, the emporium style classes transitioned to a more traditional class style. This allowed me to make some exciting changes to how Technical Mathematics was taught. One of the biggest complaints from students in this course was that they felt like it was not preparing them for their field. To show students that mathematics is used in all of the trades that are taught at IVCC, I decided to create a project for each separate major that shows students how certain topics we discussed throughout the semester were used in their field. Most importantly, I wanted to show them how trigonometry can be used. I have created eight worksheets for majors as diverse as agriculture, industrial maintenance, and radiology technician. The goal is to show students that their knowledge of mathematics can help them be more successful and innovative in their field.
