Before attending Texas A&M, I realized that the majority of the conversations I found find myself in with drafting, architectural, and engineering professors always led into the topic of urban planning. We discussed the critical role urban planners play in the overall development process. Therefore, as I completed my college selection process, I ultimately decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning at Texas A&M University. While pursuing my bachelor's degree, I also earned a minor in Art and Architectural History. The remainder of my electives and courses were directed towards social-economic issues. These are issues that society tends to not to acknowledge or want to discuss. From my point of view, planners are tasked with analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of society so we may create and improve our communities for present and future generations to come.
Urban and regional planning is a multidisciplinary field of study. Graduates of urban planning can be found in a range of professional roles that include land and real estate analysts, assistant city planners, economic development specialists, GIS technicians, emergency management specialists, etc. With this said, learning how to listen to the voices and interests of all stakeholders, especially community residents, is essential to becoming an effective planner. Planners must be unbiased in the decision-making process, so that they may provide facts of a given matter to the public and elected officials. After being provided factual information, city and community leaders can make sound and educated decisions on what is best for the overall community. In many cases, planners are also the facilitators in public discussions with local developers and outside investors. Again, planners must remain unbiased, open-minded, and seek the facts of any given matter.
