Edmondson Village in Southwest Baltimore is conveniently located just outside Downtown known for its historic shopping center and a significant racial transition in the mid-20th century. The tree-laden community features churches, small business, and the Enoch Pratt Library. Early development: Before the 20th century, the area consisted of country estates and farms. From 1910 to 1930, it grew into a suburban-style neighborhood with rowhouses.
Edmondson Village Shopping Center: In 1947, the developers Joseph and Jacob Meyerhoff built the Edmondson Village Shopping Center. It was one of Baltimore's first retail centers designed for suburban shoppers with cars, featuring a movie theater, bowling alley, and large parking lot.
Recent redevelopment
Current status: Redevelopment is currently underway at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center, with construction on the site having started in late 2024.
Planned improvements: The redesign aims to attract new businesses, including an Aldi grocery store, restaurants, a coffee shop, and a primary care clinic. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is also set to establish a new headquarters in the complex.
Timeline: The new Aldi and the Meals on Wheels headquarters are both expected to open in 2026.

The Southwestern District is comprised of communities such as Irvington, Edmondson Village, Allendale and Ten Hills. It is the home to the Gwynns Falls Trail and Leakin Park, which together comprise more than 1,000 acres —one of the larger urban wilderness preserves in the United States. The Southwestern District is also home to the historical 300-acre Loudon Park Cemetery, where Union and Confederate graves are located on opposite hills.
