Black Americans have fundamentally shaped the soul and foundation of the United States. Through continuous activism, cultural innovation, and resilience, they have repeatedly driven the nation toward its stated democratic ideals, leaving an indelible impact. Somehow, through slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, segregation, redlining, voter suppression, and discrimination, Black people never stopped believing in the possibility of America. The cultural and historical impact of Black joy is a powerful, undeniable force. Scholars and historians recognize the expression and cultivation of joy in the Black American community as a radical, resilient act. It highlights a unique and enduring legacy of strength.
And this month they managed, again, to bring us joy and hope.
They shared with us their freedom celebration, JUNETEENTH.
The remarkable Black athletes and coaches of the New York Knicks brought pure, unfiltered joy to New York City (and fans everywhere) by capturing the 2026 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP.
Barack and Michelle Obama, at the opening of the OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL CENTER gave us the gift of renewed pride and belief in the possibilities of this country.

THE NEW YORK KNICKS
NBA Champs 2026
Their historic championship run highlights the unmatched athleticism, skill, and competitive resolve of the roster's core Black athletes. The victory added a legendary chapter to the deep intersection of Black culture and New York basketball. From local black playgrounds to the Madison Square Garden hardwood, the team perfectly embodied the gritty, underground spirit of New York hip-hop and determination.
You'll enjoy the New York Times article above.
The ESPN article (right) has lots of references you may not get (we didn't) if you aren't familiar with hip-hop, but the stories it tells are joyful and moving.
Both articles have wonderful photos!!
"A beautiful part about this Knicks team is how cosmopolitan it is, men of different backgrounds coming together in a city that, at its best, promotes an idea and action of diversity that is just as cool as it is important."
