Ketanji Brown Jackson
US Supreme Court Nominee
US Supreme Court Nominee
Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court on April 7, 2022.
Three Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah — joined all 48 Democrats and two independents who caucus with them in supporting President Biden’s historic nominee.
She will not be sworn in until the end of the current court's term (end of June), when Justice Breyer officially retires. She will be seated at the beginning of the next term, traditionally the first Monday of October (October 3, 2022).
Brown Jackson will be the sixth woman and third Black justice to ascend to the high court, which will for the first time have two Black members, three members of color and four women.
As promised at our meeting on March 28, here is the PBS NewsHour video "Courting Justice."
As we expected, the Sunday New York Times and Washington Post continued their coverage of the Brown Jackson hearings by including many opinion pieces written subsequent to the hearings' end. If you'd like to view some of them, a few are highlighted below:
"The Ketanji Brown Jackson Hearings Showed the Power Of Black Sisterhood" SaraEllen Strongman WAPO HERE
"By Trashing Jackson, the GOP Magnified a Right-Wing Court's Legitimacy Problem" E. J. Dionne WAPO HERE
"Distinguished Person of the Week: The Gap Between a Nominee and the Senate Has Never Been Bigger" Jennifer Rubin WAPO HERE
On March 2, Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, reacted to the nomination. She ends her New York Times essay with: "There will be inspiring moments, and there will be ugly and unwarranted attacks during Judge Jackson’s confirmation hearing. But she will be confirmed. And something on the court, and in our expectations of it, will change."
The first part of her prediction has proven to be correct, the second part is as yet unknown. In our March 28th conversation, we will consider both.
Senate Judiciary Committee Hearings on the Nomination of Judge Brown Jackson March 21-23, 2022
The committee is expected to vote April 4 on the nomination of Jackson, who currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
