A drifting hand tracing, carving and thumbing a mark on the cold surface of a wall. Handprints bled onto the surface, breathing and disappearing into air. Seeing and hearing and feeling again and again. Thumbing through pages, the textured grain traced across the lines of the pad. The flush of a floors heat, the rust of a metal chair and the lines of past experiences. Caressing, holding, grabbing ribbons of light and surface. Moving amongst shadow and mass to find harbor and solitude. Trace-forms arcing through the air, meeting bands of cold concrete, warming to the touch. Splayed movement, through streams and arcs of collective space, returning and circling.
Gyre is a public library project that brings attention back to the physical and sensory qualities of reading. It makes use of large arcing ribboning concrete forms that guide and direct space, beckoning touch. Material choices such as an aluminum shingling system that interacts with the wind emphasize sensory experiences from a distance while a pedestrian bridge connects the project to a local school. The project creates moments for sitting and rest, with aggregated massing that grows from the walls to define space.
