Change is grotesque, it is uncomfortable, it is strange
To be reborn from the sludge of past limbs
A rebirth, made up of the re scattering of existence
Metamorphosis takes inspiration from the change of a caterpillar into a butterfly, in the grotesqueness and slowness of change, from form to sludge to final form. Utilizing a piece of tule, the piece incorporates an exploration into concepts of concealment, masking, and veiling. The relationship between the performer and the prop changes and develops over the course of the piece, first synonymous, then concealing, before becoming distinct, separate, and eventually discarded. The piece begins with the tule as its own object, with the performer concealed within, and through specific choices, slowly reveals itself to be in relationship with the performer. The piece looked to subvert conceptions, revealing the performer in unconventional manners. Metamorphosis utilizes an evolution of movement, from small gestural moments to large, rolling, frothing, and scooping. Costume choices give emphasis to the human form, providing a minimal addition to the performer. The sound score adds a sense of discomfort, grossness, and tension to the piece, with clicks, cracks, and more erratic sounds connecting to themes of the body and time.
