choreography, composing
The whole body in beats, vibrating and singing
The toes arc across the floor, tapping, gliding, and returning to the hollow of the arch
Hands meeting the face, pressing and forming against, splayed out and around to encompass
The slipping and catching of skin, muscles, and bones, all sinewed and sewn together
A rippling through the underscore of layers - melting and fixating and forming, holding
To the finger's pad, the thin lines of a palm, stretched and bound to another
Soma manifests an exploration of how your relationship with your body informs your relationship with others. Through distinct, subtle, and sensual choreography, the piece implored the performers to exist within their bodies, in space. Utilizing themes of touch, interaction, weight, and stillness, the piece reflected improvisational work, along with an emphasis on the relationship between the choreographer and the performers. Slow movement invited performers to be specific about their intentions and to reflect deeply about the sensations of each choice. Through a stark contrast of monochromatic clothing choices, emphasis is placed upon movement and the bodies of the performers. The piece revolved around moving partnerships that flitted throughout the piece, with larger gestural movements highlighting the space. A project element set behind the piece slowly revealed itself, transformed, and left, beginning with a collection of prose that aligned with the slow revealing of the performers with eyes closed.
