SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ZERO WASTE SOCIETY

- CONFERENCE FOR ALL PEDAGOGICAL WORKERS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL IVANA CANKARJA VRHNIKA

The fact is that our town Vrhnika is environmentally very conscious. It was the first Slovene municipality that joined the initiative »Zero waste«.

In September 2017 we hosted an expert from a local recycling center, Mr. Jernej Fefer, who is also an independent environmental counsellor. He held an interesting eye-opening lecture and presented how our everyday habits affect climate change and how sustainable attitude is urgently necessary in order to save our planet. We learned a lot of facts and realised how endangered our planet really is.

Mr. Fefer is also the author of independent environmental coursebooks, intended for young learners (mostly recycling topics), but also for older students (global learning – sustainability). Our school will integrate environmental education into the curriculum, using the mentioned coursebooks (grades, 3,4,5 and 8).

JOINT ACTION – COLLECTING USED PAPER

Each year ninth grade students organize 4 actions which take place at the recycling center, where parents and other relatives of all students at Primary school Ivana Cankarja Vrhnika bring used paper.

This school year we already had one such action where we collected approximately 5 tons of used paper. The recycling center pays for this paper and the money goes to the school fund or to the individual class, who spends the money for final excursions or socially threatened students.

WORKSHOPS FOR ALL PEDAGOGICAL WORKERS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL IVANA CANKARJA

Then we attended one of the 4 workshops:

SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE

Like many other children around the world, our school as well decided to follow Greta Thunberg's example and strike for the Climate change. First of all, individual teachers familiarized students about her concern and motivated them for the urgent change of our behaviour for the sake of our planet. Thus, we set up a delegation which took part at the main and the first such climate change strike in the capital city of Ljubljana (March 15th 2019), while others (around 100 students) decided to strike on the streets of Vrhnika. They carefully prepared for the event by making banners that they used when marching.
