Agrupamento de Escolas de Mem Martins

The Secondary School of Mem Martins (ESMM) is a public education institution with Secondary Education (10th, 11th and 12th grade) and Basic Education (7th, 8th and 9th grade); it was established on October 1983 (nineteen eighty-three).

ESMM is located in Mem Martins, Sintra covering a very diverse social and multiracial environment, dealing with the typical problems of the Portuguese educational system, characteristic of large metropolitan areas, such as: significant dropout rates, academic achievement levels below the desired, the lack of goals and motivation of young people and students’ bad behaviour.

The distribution by levels of education is:

  • Basic Education (7th, 8th and 9th grade);
  • Secondary Education (10th, 11th and 12th grade) with continuing education courses in Visual Arts, Economic Sciences, Sciences and Technologies and Languages ​​and Humanities;
  • Vocational Educational Training in Chemical Analysis, Graphic Design, Information Technology, Secretariat, Healthcare Aid, sales assistant and manager and programmer of informatics systems.

In June 2012 (two thousand and twelve) ESMM clustered with three schools, two of them with the 1st cycle of basic education (1st to 4th grade) with kindergarten and one with the 2nd and 3rd cycle of basic education (6th to 9th grade) having changed its official denomination to Group of Schools of Mem Martins (AEMM), ESMM is the school headquarters.

AEMM has about 3000 (three thousand) students and 260 (two hundred and sixty) teachers.

AEMM has three units of structured teaching, in order to respond to problems of the students with Autism spectrum, but they are placed in regular classes, conditioned by the measures set in their Individual Educational Plans and/or Individual Specific Curricula. AEMM has about 6% (six percent) of pupils with special needs educational (NEE) of permanent or prolonged character (cognitive dysfunction sensory, motor or emotional).

The school has a significant number of students of foreign origin (over 20 (twenty) nationalities), mainly from the PALOP’s (African Countries with Official Portuguese Language), Brazil, Asia and Eastern countries which represent 12% (twelve percent) of the school population.

AEMM signed in July 2013 (two thousand and thirteen) a contract for autonomy in the development of the legal framework of school autonomy.
