4 &15-10-2017 Attending of the Panhellenic Conference “Views of Sustainable School”

NGO Aeiforum and Ralleio Lykeio organized the Panhellenic Conference “Views of Sustainable School” at the amphitheater of the school on the 14th and the 15th October 2017.

The Organizing Committee was chaired by Dr Dimitris Kalaitzidis, Chairperson of NGO Aeiforum and former Director of Ralleio , while the new Director of Ralleio Dr Sarantos Oikonomidis and Ms Katerina Christodoulou, EFL teacher, were members of the Organizing Committee.

At the conference, Ms Christodoulou, coordinator of European Program Erasmus+ KA2 Routes to Outdoor Oriented Teaching and Sustainability/ROOTS and member of the pedagogical group of European Program Erasmus+ KA2 Climate Change Ready/ CCR, presented the way in which Ralleio adopted the model of Sustainable School through the use of Sustainable School Indicators in the past 6 years (2011-2017).

The conference was attended by Ralleio teachers who wanted to enhance in the particular methodology and by Ralleio students in order to raise their environmental, social and technological awareness.

20-10-2017 Attending of Lecture by School Councilor Dr A. Mastrapas

In the framework of Erasmus+ KA2 program Climate Change Ready, teachers and parents of Ralleio students attended a lecture by School Councilor Dr A. Mastrapas entitled “Sea and Winds in Greek antiquity” at Pireas Archaeological Museum on Friday 20th October. The lecture was delivered in the framework of action “Civilisation and the Environment” and was organized by the department of Educational Programs and Communication of the Directorate of Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Students from GEL Kallipolis presented a short theatrical play and students from the Musical School of Pireas sang songs about the sea. The aim of attending the lecture was for teachers and parents to appreciate the natural and cultural heritage of our country and to raise awareness about its protection.

20-10-2017 Recycling Station Cleaning

After the summer holidays, Ralleio Recycling Station needed a good cleaning. C1 class students with teachers Ms Kaneletopoulou and Ms Christodoulou undertook the task.

24-10-2017 Erasmus National Agency Seminar

Ms H. Kaneletopoulou, Coordinator of the European Program Erasmus+ KA2 Climate Change Ready/ CCR and Ms K. Christodoulou, Coordinator of the European Program Erasmus+ KA2 Routes to Outdoor Oriented Teaching and Sustainability/ROOTS attended a special technical seminar organized by the Greek National agency for Erasmus Programs on the organization and monitoring of 2017 KA2 programs in order to familiarize with technical matters pertinent to the two programs at Ralleio Lykeio. The seminar took place at the center of Athens on 24th October 2017.

8-11-2017 Educational visit to the centre for environmental education of Drapetsona

In the framework European Program Erasmus+KA2 Climate Change Ready (CCR), thirty- five Ralleio A class students who study the optional subject of Natural Resources Management visited the Center for Environmental Education of Drapetsona on the 8th of November 2017. The general aim of the educational visit was to raise the students’ environmental awareness. The objectives were to familiarize students with environmental policies and to approach recycling by experience. The students also took part in an especially designed game which pointed out the importance of recycling for society.

The visit was organized by the teacher of the class Mr N. Kollias, and the students were also accompanied by Ms A. Giourga and Mr G. Katopodis, members of the pedagogical group of the Program.

12-11-2017 Volunteering in Athens Authentic Marathon

In the framework European program Erasmus+KA2 Climate Change Ready (CCR), Ralleio Lykeio took part in the catering and recycling volunteer groups of Athens Authentic Marathon on the 12th of November 2017.

In particular, a group of 15 Ralleio students helped in the catering station of the 5 km run, while another group of students, teachers and their families worked with NGO “Team for the World” in the recycling stations of 5km and of 10km runs. The recycling volunteer team collected plastic bottle caps for the school to offer for the purchase of a wheelchair. All volunteers had been briefed by Hellenic Athletics Federation beforehand.

Ms H. Kaneletopoulou, coordinator of the program, Mr G. Katopodis, member of the pedagogical team, responsible for the in-school and out-of-school activities and Ms A. Kourkoumeli, Greek Language teacher, took part in the activity.

22-11-2017 Cleaning of the school Garden

Our school garden needed α a good cleaning after the heavy rainfall a few days ago. Class B2 students with PE teacher Ms Tsolakidou put on their gloves and removed the garbage that was accumulated in the flower beds.

Our school garden is clean and full of beautiful plants and flowers once again!

New bins at the school

The Cleaning Department of the Municipality of Pireas brought two waste bins, one of them for recycling, outside the school after the application of Ralleio director Dr Sarantos Economidis, a member of the pedagogical group of the European program Erasmus+KA2 “Getting Climate Change ready”.

1-3 /12/2017 Attendance of the 4th Panhellenic Conference “Biology in Education”

Ralleio students participating in the Erasmus+KA2 program “Climate Change Ready” and A class students working on Climate change in the subject of Project (coordinator: Ms Psoma) attended a very interesting documentary entitled “Greece and the Sea: Past, Present and Future” on the first day of the 4th Panhellenic Conference “Biology in Education”. The conference was organized by the Panhellenic Union of Bioscientists, in cooperation with Ralleio Lykeio, Pireas Directorate of Secondary Education and Attica Regional Directorate of Education and held at the amphitheater of Ralleio Lykeio on 1st, 2nd and 3rd December 2017.

4-12-2017: Lecture on the effects of climate change on Cyprus

In the framework of the European program Erasmus+ KA2 Getting “Climate Change Ready”, and in the framework of A class subjects Natural Resources Management and Projectwork (subject: Climate Change), a lecture was organized for the students on the effects of climate change on Cyprus. The speakers, Ms E. Vlachou, Biology teacher in Saint Nicholas Lyceum in Limassol and Ms A. Kleanthous, Biologist, assistant director in Idalio Lyceum in Nicosia, presented the effects of climate change on the fauna and the morphology of the ground on the island of Cyprus. The lecture took place on the 4th of December 2017.

The two speakers, who also mentioned traditional Cypriot proverbs on human intervention on the environment, proposed a joint study of weather patterns to be conducted by the coordinators of the 3 schools on social media platforms.

The lecture was attended by Mr Kollias, teacher of the subject Natural Resources Management, Ms G. Psoma, teacher of the subject Projectwork and Ms H. Kaneletopoulou, coordinator of the European program.

The objective of the lecture was to raise awareness on the effects of climate change and the overall goal was to raise the environmental and cultural awareness of the students.

Christmas Ralleio Bazaar (December 2017)

Students and teachers, mothers and grandmothers created candles, Christmas ornaments, handicrafts, woollen items, good luck charms or baked special Christmas sweets, biscuits and cakes.

Students from the Recycling/Reusing Team of Erasmus+KA2 European Program “Getting Climate Change Ready” offered books and other items they do not use any more for the second-hand section of the bazaar, while students from Team Aesthetics of the same program were responsible for the set up and the decoration of the bazaar at the entrance hall of the school.

Logo Competition

As agreed upon at the transnational meeting in Hamburg (6-7 November 2017), a student competition in each school of the Erasmus+KA2 program CCR: Climate Change Ready will take place. The first stage of the competition will take place in each school where the students will vote for the best logo produced in the school. The coordinators will then decide which of the six finalist logos will be the official logo of the program at the Training meeting which will take place in Hamburg from the 29th January 2018 to the 2nd February 2018.

11-11-2018 Ralleio volunteers in the 36th Athens Authentic Marathon

A 12-student group of Ralleio volunteers participated in the 36th Athens Authentic Marathon and in particular in the morning 5 km run. Many of the volunteers were members of the Erasmus+ Climate Change Ready (CCR) European program accompanied by two teachers, namely Ms Bia Kaneletopoulou, Coordinator of the afore-mentioned program and Mr Dimitris Chalikias, member of the pedagogical team. The students enthusiastically handed out bottles of water and cheered all the runners. Of course we helped with the recycling of the plastic bottles and collected plastic bottle caps for the Solidarity team of the school and the purchase of a wheelchair for financially weaker students with special needs.

We also proudly received a souvenir from the Hellenic Sports Clubs Association for our participation.

29-11-2018 Recycling training seminar

Ms H. Kaneletopoulou, Coordinator of the European program ERASMUS+ ΚΑ2 Climate Change Ready/ CCR (2017-19) applied for and attended a training seminar organised by Harokopio University, Pireas and Athens Directorates of Education and Athens Environmental Education Office. The seminar was held on Thursday 29-11-2018 in the framework of the European week for waste reduction.

In the first part of the seminar, the speakers referred to food waste prevention in Greek households, circular economy and the use of plastic bags. A representative of the company “Electric and Electronic Devices Recycling” elaborated on the model of preventing and reusing electric and electronic waste. A representative of the Greek Society for Recycling recommended various activities towards waste prevention to be organised with the students. Last but not least, there was a presentation of an innovative method of processing hotel and restaurant food waste into fodder.

In the second part of the seminar, there were three different parallel workshops on food management, on the social impact of food waste and on responsible consumption.

20-30 -11-2018 Recycling of electronic and electrical appliances

In the framework of the European Week for Waste Reduction (18-26 November 2018), the coordinating teachers of the two European ROOTS & CCR programs, Mrs Christodoulou and Mrs Kaneletopoulou, organized, in order to raise the awareness of the educational community in reducing the ecological footprint, Recycling Station of the School of Non-Functional Electronics and Electrical Appliances from 20-30 November. Also, via email, the parents and guardians of the students were informed to help sustain the school's efforts.

The European Week for Waste Reduction is an initiative aiming to promote the implementation of awareness-raising actions about sustainable resource and waste management during a single week. In

9-12-2018 «Climate Action: 1,5ο C Deadline»

Ralleio Lykeio participated in the protest march against climate change « Climate Action: 1,5ο C Deadline» held in the center of Athens on Sunday 9/12/2018 with a group of Ralleio students and the coordinator or the European Program Erasmus+ KA2 CCR Ms H. Kaneletopoulou.

10-12-2018 Electric and Electronic Devices Recycling

We are proud to announce that in the framework of the European Week for Waste Reduction, Ralleio organised and coordinated the collection and delivery of 975 kilos non functional electric and electronic devices on 10/12/2018. We started collecting devices in the school year 2016-17 in the framework of UNESCO “Today for Tomorrow: Coordinating and Implementing the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development” international pilot program of which Ralleio was a proud member. The collection continued in the framework of the cooperation of the 2 Erasmus+ KA2 programs of our school, namely Change Ready/ CCR (2017-19) and Routes to Outdoor Oriented Teaching and Sustainability/ ROOTS (2017-2020).

The Coordinators of CCR Ms H. Kaneletopoulou and of ROOTS Ms K. Christodoulou would like to thank all students, teachers and the local community for supporting this initiative.

11-12-2018 Visit of ERASMUS+ ΚΑ2 CCR teachers and students to the Athens Special Junior and Senior High School

In the framework of International Disability day (3rd December) and of the synergy between Ralleio Lykeio and the Athens Special Junior and Senior High School in the European program ERASMUS+ ΚΑ2, “Climate Change Ready” / CCR (2017-19), thirteen Ralleio CCR students, accompanied by the Coordinator Ms H. Kaneletopoulou and the member of the pedagogical team Mr N. Panagiotopoulos, visited the Special School on 11-12-2018, invited by the Director.

All students were informed about Paralympic basketball, volleyball and goalball and participated in sports activities organised by Special Physical Education teachers and by the federal goalball coach.

Paralympic champion Makis Kalaras, invited by the Special School, talked to the students about how he transformed his disability into something positive, about how people in wheelchairs can live a “normal” everyday life emphasising on patience, determination and persistence.

The aims of the activity were to raise awareness about equal access of people with special needs to education and to highlight and disseminate good practices in the field of inclusive education. The objective was to raise the awareness of the participating students regarding the rights of children with special educational needs, the respect for those different and the potential of promoting equal learning opportunities.
