Follow along with your clarinet!
Open the case with buckles flipping up.
Connect the beak and the barrel with small twisting motions.
Place the wider end of the ligature over top the beak so that the screws are facing you.
Soak the reed in your mouth. A 2.0 or 2.5 strength reed is suggested for beginners.
Find the flat side of the reed and the flat side of the beak. Push the ligature up as you insert the reed. *The video is particularly helpful for getting this step right.*
Use the pictures below to make sure your reed is in the correct position.
Tighten the screws on the ligature slightly until they stop. Do not overtighten.
Make sure your mouthpiece looks like this. Notice the slight amount of beak that is visible behind the reed. Notice where the ligature rests on the reed.
The ligature is set too high. The ligature should rest on the thicker, uncut part of the reed.
The ligature is set too low.
The reed is set too low. Notice how much of the beak is visible behind the tip of the reed. There should only be a small sliver of the beak visible behind the reed.
The reed is set too high. Notice how much of the reed is sticking out past the tip of the beak.
