The island of Fortuna, with its capital Glückshafen, was the first Prussian colony on Magellania. It was taken into possession in 1758, during the Prussian involvement into the Seven Years' War. After the war, in 1782 the Königlicher Preußischer Handelsverein zu Magellanien was founded to fascilitate trade and Prussian influence in the Balboan Ocean.
Prior to 1860, Prussia had extended its influence over the Costa de San Sebastian. After the unification of the German Empire, a formal claim over the Sebastienküste was made, which was granted in the peace of 1875. The exception was the city of Puerto de Magellan, which continued its own administration. After the death of Emperor Wilhelm I. in 1882 the entirety of the colony was renamed into Kaiser-Friedrichs-Land and partitioned into three governates Sebastienküste, Nordfriedrichsland and Südfriedrichsland. In 1886, the town of Malzstadt was founded by the naturalist Dr. Eberhard Malz.
