Science and math classes during quarantine
We all know that the COVID-19 changed the life and routine in schools all over the world. Once the outbreak started, early in the year, something very unusual happened, converting traditional classes into online meetings. This wasn’t different for science and math at Colégio Santo Américo. In order to keep up with good quality of the classes and content through online platforms, some adaptations needed to be made.
6th Grade/Math: Polygons; Kitchen Measurements
During the third trimester, the students could focus on: Polygons and 2D shapes. During these classes the students were able to learn new vocabulary and correlate words with numbers. In a second moment, the focus was on the kitchen. Students learned how to read and recognise measurements in both metric and imperial systems. After some regular exercises of transforming milliliters to fluid ounces and vice and versa. The final outcome of the measurements classes was to combine kitchen vocabulary and math. The students had to create they own version of the very famous mug cake. They had a lot of fun!
Here is one example of how students could practice the topic "polygons". They had to combine creativity and math.
Antonella Guzzo Laurenti 6A 1
This was a fun activity!
Students had to use their knowledge on kitchen utensils and measurements along with a lot of creativity! The final outcome was a mug cake recipe.
Sophia Wohnrath 6D 27
This is another sample of the Mug Cake Project.
The students learned how to use utensils to measure ingredients in the Kitchen. Teaspoon and tablespoon, for example!

6th Grade/Science: "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"
How 'green' are you? Are you interested in the environment? Are you worried about it?
There is no escape from it: pick up a newspaper or switch on the news and you will see stories about the environment, so It was important to teach students why they should reduce, reuse, recycle. The topic led us to talk about natural resources, renewable and non-renewable sources of energy, endangered animals and feeding relationships.
Here are some researches done about Endangered Animals:
