Culture Codes
Each access incorporated in the CICG receives a unique code that refers to the country or Brazilian state of origin of the access. This code is assigned either to trap cultures accessions (containing several species of AMF), or pure cultures containing only one fungal species. The assignment of this code is in accordance with the Convention on Biological Biodiversity, so that the origin of each accession can be quickly identified.
The accesses have an alpha-numeric code, similar to that adopted in INVAM, formed by the following components:
1) 3 Letters that correspond to the geographic origin of each culture, which allows a quick identification of the Brazilian state or country of origin of the access. Considering that one of the objectives of the CICG is to conserve AMF germplasm originating from the Brazilian territory, accesses from Brazilian states have their own code. The list below shows the letters used and the Brazilian states to which they refer.
2) 3-digit number followed by a letter that is unique for each access (e.g. SCT115 or MGR601). In most cases, trap cultures allow the sporulation of several AMF species and attempts are made to establish pure cultures for each of them. Thus, the letter after the 3 digit number serves to identify fungal isolates present in the same mycorrhizal community, coming from the same geographic region but belonging to different species. For example, Gigaspora albida SCT250A and Acaulospora scrobiculata SCT250C are accessions of two species that sporulated in the SCT250 trap culture and were established in pure cultures.
3) A dash followed by a number that indicates the generation of each culture during the repropagation process. Each access, especially pure culture, is reactivated after a certain time. For example, the SCT250A-3 access means that this access is being propagated by the third time.
