I was raised Anglican and have had exposure to many religions. I moved to Vermont after working in China for over thirty years. Now I live in Barre, retired from working as a lawyer in New York and in China. I have a high regard for high church. We need the benefit of symbolic and transfigurational elements in our lives. We also all need to be a part of a community that has securely anchored values. The heritage of our church, the brilliance of our priest, the breadth of our youth program and the excellence of our music concerts and our other outreach programs are all meaningful anchors at Christ Church that I hope to share with ever more people who come by our church.
Mary Jane and Spencer live in Waitsfield where they raised 2 sons. Her experience includes residential insurance, education, small shop owner, town government, and tax assessment. She is especially thankful for Christ Church, her family and friends. She hopes to follow the guidance of Bishop Joyce who told the confirmands at her confirmation, "Don't go to Heaven alone, take someone with you."
I am a twin, middle child of five girls, mother of one son, and a retired social worker (40 yrs. in public mental health system) and a transplant from Northern Michigan, moving to Montpelier in 2017 to be near my son and his family. I was baptized, confirmed and married at All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing, MI. We moved north to Traverse City for my husband's work and Grace Episcopal Church became my worship home. At Grace I worked in the nursery, taught Sunday School, worked with the Altar Guild, was a LEM both at the altar and taking communion out to homebound parishioners, joined Daughters of the King (an order within the church focusing on daily prayer and service), was a member of Episcopal Peace Fellowship, worked with Jubilee ministry, food pantry and Friday Lunch Program and an ecumenical program of rotating church winter shelter for people experiencing homelessness. I chaired the Outreach Committee and worked with the Stewardship Committee. Contemplative Prayer group at Grace Church was a great blessing providing nurture for both our inward and outward journey. At Christ Church I am a member of the altar Guild, recently a vestry member, and a periodic participant with the Housing Development Committee which is greatly hampered by the absence of a committed non-profit development partner AND the very pressing physical plant needs for the building in which we worship. I do believe in the communion of saints. As we worship together we are prepared to go out into the community to do the work God has given us to do.
I grew up in the Episcopal church in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and after exploring other spiritual options during my young adulthood, I joined Christ Church in 1988 (36 years and counting!). I felt that I had arrived home to my spiritual place, where its spiritual resonance, its outreach mission, its compassion and inclusivity, and above all, its people, showed me the way to do what God intends for me. I moved to Vermont in 1970 to attend the UVM Masters in Education degree program, and since then, I have had varied careers, among them - teacher, journalist, public information officer for the USDA and the Vermont Arts Council, and most recently, co-owner of Bear Pond Books with my husband, Michael Katzenberg. For 44 years, we have lived in Middlesex, where we raised our two children.
I have lived in Central Vermont since 1970, and Christ Church has been my spiritual home for almost as long, including a nine-year stint as Parish Secretary and many years in the choir. My work has been mostly in education and mental health. I am very interested in social justice and I serve on the Board of Directors of Vermont Interfaith Action. I appreciate the opportunity to serve Christ Church as a member of the Vestry and to be a part of our spiritual community.
