Concept
I recently kicked a daily coffee habit. I wanted to produce a farewell video celebrating the bean to brew process that has been my morning routine. The sequence is a closed film with the same shot at the beginning and the end.
Lighting
I wanted consistent lighting throughout the sequence to highlight the action. I lit the front with a Falcon Eyes RX-12T LED and the bistro practicals from above. Natural daylight floods in from behind the espresso machine and coffee grinder.
Edits
There are 17 total edits in the sequence. The cuts were made on the action from the grinding of the beans to tamping the grounds to the final drip-drip of the brewed cup. I wanted the edits to have a sort of rhythmic tempo. I added a jazzy music bed to accompany the final java sequence and tie it together.
Challenges
Light reflection off of the stainless steel appliances. This was the biggest issue with this shoot. I used the dimmer on the LEDs to find a good balance then angled the lights to reduce reflection off the appliances and into the lens.
Shot 5 of the ground beans was harder to see. The dark brown grounds were against the black plastic of the coffee holder. I dialed up the LEDs for this shot and brought the lighting closer to the object.
