Project Summary
This video project includes one animated 90-second intro and three 15-second animated bumpers. These are the motion assets for a future short video documentary on horror film scores.
Conceptual Idea
The concept of the film’s opening is a 2D animation, featuring recreations of famous horror movie scenes. The style of the scenes is a simple black silhouette on a limited color palette background. Elements of one movie transition into elements from another movie. The final shot reveals the title of the documentary. I incorporated motion graphics into the background for a "Scooby-Doo"-ish vintage cartoon style.
Influences
I am a fan of minimalist animation as seen on cable channel branding and in commercial advertising, particularly Turner Classic Movies, Apple and Noovie’s Name That Movie. Here are a few examples that inspired this project:
I pulled from these inspirations and classic 1960s cartoons for a funhouse-style animation of iconic horror scenes to accompany their musical scores.
Efforts
The 2D animated assets were hand-drawn in Procreate then I imported the individual layers into Photoshop to clean them up. I imported all elements into After Effects. I created the titles and motion graphics for the background in AE as well. I imported the final HD version into Premiere and added the film scores and slate cards for the intro and bumpers. I edited the clips in Premiere and exported the final HD project. I then upscaled the HD video to 4k in Topaz for the final.
Mid-Term Project Critique Feedback
Based on suggestions in the Mid-term Project Critique:
I was able to incorporate the use of Procreate to draw the individual animated elements. I appreciate this feedback which sped up the workflow. It was also a lot of fun to use.
I also incorporated instructor feedback about scaling the assets up and down to transition in and out of scenes throughout the animation.
