Luke’s Air Force Base (IATA: LUF; ICAO: KLUF) is located in Glendale, AZ, 20 NM west of Phoenix Sky Harbor. Luke’s AFB was first opened in 09/1943 and is now home to the world’s largest fighter wing; approximately 205 aircraft and 25 Squadrons. You can expect to see a large amount of F16s and F35s at this base from Air Forces such as USAF, RSAF, RCAF, RNAF, and RDAF.
You can frequently see other aircraft types such as C17s, C130s, and more. Another major base aircraft is the Airborne Tactical Advantage Co. (ATAC) Dassault Mirage F1s. (source: spotterguide.net)
Luke Air Force Base is a very easy location to spot at with the only issue encountered being the newly constructed wall between the base and Northern Avenue, where all of these pictures were taken. No problems were had with the local police or base security, and there was at least one more spotter at the location.
USAF, RNLAF and RDAF F-35s were seen while spotting as well as two ATAC Mirage F1s, N619AX and N623AX. RSAF and Top Aces F-16s are also based at Luke in 2025, though none were seen during the visit. It is worth sticking around the base multiple days to guarantee a shot at seeing everything at Luke.
Phoenix Sky Harbor located in central Phoenix is another worthwhile spotting location with frequent military flights and daily ANG KC-135 flights. RAF C-17 ZZ175 was spotted on approach into KPHX.
