Year 5 – GP5:
GP Assistantship
Aims
By the end of the 8 weeks students should be thinking and acting like a generalist: be able to assess undifferentiated acute and chronic presentations and negotiate a safe management plan with the majority of patients – always with supervision
Teaching commitment
• 8 weeks GP placement: 7 weeks in practice full time (September - March), 1 week of central teaching
• 1-2 students
Learning activities – these will vary but could include the following
• Regular Student Surgery sessions with debrief and
feedback (3 – 4 per week)
• Backroom practice work – Chronic Disease
Reviews, Administrative work, Medication reviews and prescribing and QOF work.
• Professional shadowing
• Tutorials
• Working as part of the Practice Team
• Self-Directed Learning sessions (2x half days per week)
Assessment
• Two Mini CEXs
• 5 x Patient feedback forms
• Midway Assessment at Week 4
• Patient Case and Reflection on Professional Practice Principles
• Practice Project (in pairs)
• Significant Event Analysis – written up and discussed as part of SEA meeting in practice
• Assessment of Professional Attitude and Conduct Form
• Overall Tutor Assessment of Performance.
Reimbursement
£6,890 for 2 students. £3,445 for 1 student. NB: sessional payment rates increase with the number of teaching sessions offered
