Year 2- GP2

Aims

GP2 is a campus and online-based placement for all Year 2 students at QMUL School of Medicine and Dentistry.

This year, the emphasis is on the fundamentals of general practice (generalism) which will help students understand the principles of general practice as they progress through medical school and afterwards.

GP2 will introduce students to the broader context and key components of General Practice as a speciality and give them an understanding of the professional knowledge.

Teaching commitment

Each student will have 6 days of GP2 on Tuesdays throughout the academic year (October - April).

Each teaching day will consist of half team-based learning on campus and half online based role-play, facilitated by GP tutors and actor facilitators

Learning activities – these will vary but could include the following

•  Team-Based Learning (TBL): is an instructional strategy designed to enhance collaborative learning and critical thinking skills among students in the medical field. It's particularly valuable in the second year of medical school when students are building on foundational knowledge and preparing for clinical rotations.

•  Role play - online teaching: students will be split up into groups of 12-15 with a GP tutor online using Teams. In these sessions, there will be an opportunity to watch real consultations (using Virtual Primary Care), discussions with the GP tutors and practise role plays with actor facilitators.

Assessment

Tutors will assess each student on a piece of reflective writing which can be accompanied by an (optional) creative piece of work, maybe a drawing, a poem, a photograph that adds to the story (without identifying the patient).

Reimbursement

Central tutors will commit to two teaching sessions per placement day.

Sessional payment: £265
